{"id":126736,"date":"2025-10-24T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=126736"},"modified":"2025-10-23T15:18:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T20:18:51","slug":"distinguished-scientist-gurudutt-pendyala-phd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/10\/24\/distinguished-scientist-gurudutt-pendyala-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Distinguished scientist: Gurudutt Pendyala, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><em><em>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers and leaders who will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 6 for UNMC\u2019s annual research awards \u2013 the prestigious Scientist Laureate Award and the Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator, Career Achievement and Community Service to Research Awards.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distinguished Scientist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Distinguished Scientist Awards, which are sponsored by the chancellor, recognize researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:&nbsp;<\/strong>Gurudutt Pendyala, PhD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>&nbsp;Professor of anesthesiology and Robert Lieberman Endowed Professor of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, UNMC College of Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>&nbsp;2008<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>&nbsp;Secunderabad, Telangana, India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Describe your research focus in three words or less:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addiction, neurodevelopment and infectious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is research important in the world today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From pandemics to AI, research replaces guesswork with data driven insights. It\u2019s that wonder tool that turns \u201chmm\u201d into \u201cwow!\u201d and mostly \u201cOops!\u201d On a lighter note, maybe that explains why scientists and graphs often break up, because there\u2019s no \u201csignificant\u201d relationship. Despite these failures, scientists persist knowing \u201cevery setback is a set up for a comeback.\u201d That resilience and optimism make research always \u201cstatistically awesome.\u201d Scientists truly RISE \u2013 through <strong><u>R<\/u><\/strong>esearch, <strong><u>I<\/u><\/strong>nnovation, <strong><u>S<\/u><\/strong>cience and <strong><u>E<\/u><\/strong>ducation \u2013 powering breakthroughs and expanding knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My research will make a difference because:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAddiction doesn\u2019t knock on the door \u2014 it breaks it down, and the whole family feels the impact.\u201d My research program focuses on the neurobiology of addiction, exploring molecular mechanisms that drive substance use disorders. We integrate cutting-edge technologies, translational models and collaborative partnerships in the quest to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can transform addiction treatment. I remind myself daily this work isn\u2019t just cracking a molecular code but paving a path towards deeper understanding, informing clinical strategies and shaping public health policies. And what better way to pay it forward than mentoring future scientific leaders, teaching them that their respective research isn\u2019t just knowledge \u2013 it\u2019s hope for patients and families.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best advice I\u2019ve ever received is:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my mother, now retired after teaching high school for 33 years. \u201cAcademic success doesn\u2019t follow a clock. Some bloom early, others later \u2014 but each has a light worth waiting. Be that mentor who sees the spark before the world does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I am an avid calligrapher who tries to complement my inner scientist finding nuance in every pen stroke or precision in data points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have a knack for acronyms \u2013 be it scientific or for fun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m married to a fellow faculty member \u2014 who also happens to be a former Distinguished Scientist awardee.
