{"id":127113,"date":"2025-10-24T10:04:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T15:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=127113"},"modified":"2025-12-02T10:48:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T16:48:22","slug":"faculty-fellows-and-residents-represent-unmc-at-asa-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/10\/24\/faculty-fellows-and-residents-represent-unmc-at-asa-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty, fellows and residents represent UNMC at ASA 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Faculty, fellows and residents from the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology joined thousands of anesthesiologists from across the country in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 10-14 for the 2025 American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the week, faculty and trainees contributed to the scientific program as presenters, moderators and workshop faculty, highlighting the department\u2019s strong presence on the national stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC faculty played key roles across ASA committees and subcommittees, reflecting their ongoing leadership in shaping the future of the specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC was well represented throughout the meeting in medically challenging case presentations, POCUS and regional anesthesia workshops, and moderated sessions. Notable participation included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cale Kassel, MD, Robert Guidangen, MD, and Alec Seei, DO, presenting in pediatric anesthesia sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amanda Arnzen, MD, Erin Etoll, MD, and Andrea Dutoit, MD, facilitating trauma, ECMO, and case sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicholas Markin, MD and Jeffrey Songster, MD, leading and teaching in diagnostic POCUS workshops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rafael Arsky Lombardi, MD, Maria Michaelis, MD, and others moderating poster sessions and educational tracks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TJ Lockhart, MD, served as faculty moderator for the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) simulation course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents also delivered medically challenging case presentations and engaged in professional development activities, including the residency programs open house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A complete list of presentations and activities can be found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/anesthesia\/_documents\/anes25meetingguide.pdf\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department hosted a table staffed by residents, fellows, faculty and education leadership members at the open house. Residency program director Andrea Dutoit, MD, said this annual event provides the opportunity for interested attendees to learn more about anesthesia residency programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Anesthesiology continues to be a highly competitive specialty to match into across the country,\u201d she said. \u201cI am always thrilled for our residents and faculty to showcase and share the quality and breadth of training we provide at UNMC with students across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One highlight of the meeting was the joint alumni and friends\u2019 reception hosted by UNMC, the University of Iowa Health Care and the Medical College of Wisconsin on Saturday evening. Spearheaded by Sasha Shillcutt, MD, the event brought together alumni, residents and faculty from across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Shillcutt said the event was a great way to collaborate with other institutions to share ideas, strategies and academic work, and create new opportunities for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a great turnout of residents, alumni and faculty,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were able to build relationships that you can\u2019t always do during the busy work environment. It was a great way to hear what others are doing in their departments and abroad and gather ideas from other successful anesthesiologists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The department\u2019s participation at ASA 2025 reflects its growing national leadership in clinical practice, education, research and advocacy,&#8221; said Andrew Patterson, MD, PhD, department chair. &#8220;Through presentations, committee service and alumni engagement, UNMC anesthesiologists continue to advance the field and strengthen collaborative ties with colleagues
