{"id":127894,"date":"2025-11-21T01:52:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T07:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=127894"},"modified":"2025-11-21T13:03:45","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T19:03:45","slug":"med-center-strives-for-greater-waste-diversion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/11\/21\/med-center-strives-for-greater-waste-diversion\/","title":{"rendered":"Med center strives for greater waste diversion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Several groups at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine \u2014 led by the UNMC Office of Sustainability, environmental services, Sodexo and the LiveGreen Ambassadors Employee Resources Group \u2014 want to educate the med center community about opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is in support of the University of Nebraska\u2019s 2030 Sustainability Goal of a 90% landfill diversion rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last 12 months, the med center has diverted 2.3 million pounds of waste from the landfill, equivalent to the weight of approximately 193 ambulances. This amount represents about 20 to 25% of the total waste generated, leaving many opportunities for the campus community to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some steps to take to reduce, reuse and recycle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be prepared for what gets placed in waste receptacles.Review the recently updated UNMC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/business-finance\/sustainability\/recycling\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Office of Sustainability website, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Sustainability website<\/a>, which includes details about what materials can be recycled and how best to do that. Batteries? Cardboard? Plastic numbers 1, 2, 3, and 5? Lab coats? There are instructions for all of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider ways to reduce and divert waste at campus events organized by individual departments and units using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/business-finance\/sustainability\/recycling\/zero-waste-event.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"zero waste event kit, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zero waste event kit<\/a>. The LiveGreen Ambassadors ERG developed self-service kits available for checkout from two campus locations, containing everything needed to execute an official \u201cZero Waste Event\u201d in which 90% of the waste (by weight) is diverted away from the landfill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate ways to generate less waste at work and at home, such as eliminating single-use plastics, using electronic versions of materials instead of printing and shopping local to reduce packaging waste.
