{"id":128570,"date":"2026-01-06T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=128570"},"modified":"2026-01-05T14:21:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T20:21:28","slug":"unmc-in-2025-building-for-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/06\/unmc-in-2025-building-for-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC in 2025: Building for the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Across UNMC, 2025 was a year for the institution to build for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC\u2019s signature construction project \u2013 Project Health \u2013 took major steps forward as Nebraska\u2019s largest ever public-private partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its promise to foster UNMC innovation, the EDGE District took shape west of Saddle Creek Road with the opening of the Catalyst Building, the ribbon cutting on a new parking garage and progress in constructing UNMC\u2019s new CORE Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kearney, construction progressed toward the 2026 opening of the Health Science Education Center II facility. Ahead of that opening, UNMC\u2019s expanding programs in Kearney started welcoming new students as UNMC further developed its initiatives to grow Nebraska\u2019s health workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in a move to raise the institution\u2019s research profile, UNMC and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln received joint accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All those developments took place as UNMC continued its historic enrollment growth \u2013 with even more growth on the horizon \u2013 and adjusted to new budget constraints with an eye to the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a look back on the year 2025 at UNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning and construction continued to progress for the $2.19 billion state-of-the-art clinical, education and research facility for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"xjPmkZpADi\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/11\/regents-approval-moves-forward-project-health-work\/\">Regents\u2019 approval moves forward Project Health work<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Regents\u2019 approval moves forward Project Health work&#8221; &#8212; Newsroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/04\/11\/regents-approval-moves-forward-project-health-work\/embed\/#?secret=R5MA2I4Ecg#?secret=xjPmkZpADi\" data-secret=\"xjPmkZpADi\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EDGE District<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC cut the ribbon on the Catalyst building in May and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/10\/09\/new-edge-district-parking-garage-opens-in-midtown\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"new city-owned parking garage in October, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new city-owned parking garage in October<\/a>. In August, UNMC announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/08\/27\/unmc-announces-new-office-aimed-at-health-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"creation of the UNMC Office of Health Workforce Initiatives, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creation of the UNMC Office of Health Workforce Initiatives<\/a>, led by&nbsp;Kyle Meyer, PhD, as new associate vice chancellor for health workforce initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joint accreditation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, the Higher Learning Commission approved the University of Nebraska&#8217;s application for joint accreditation for UNMC and UNL, which the NU Board of Regents soon after authorized. UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, applauded the move for allowing&nbsp;the two universities to collaborate more fully to expand and improve educational and research pathways while also enhancing their national reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"G382RGXLAH\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/11\/24\/nu-board-of-regents-advances-joint-accreditation-for-unl-and-unmc\/\">NU Board of Regents advances joint accreditation for UNL and UNMC<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;NU Board of Regents advances joint accreditation for UNL and UNMC&#8221; &#8212; Newsroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/11\/24\/nu-board-of-regents-advances-joint-accreditation-for-unl-and-unmc\/embed\/#?secret=VItatYhUcc#?secret=G382RGXLAH\" data-secret=\"G382RGXLAH\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Budget constraints<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC faced fiscal pressure from both state and federal funding in 2025 and made a budget reduction of about 4% as Dr. Davies emphasized that UNMC must plan for sustainability and continued future growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"UjJaKPXkVN\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/07\/29\/keeping-unmc-on-a-fiscally-responsible-path\/\">Keeping UNMC on a fiscally responsible path<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Keeping UNMC on a fiscally responsible path&#8221; &#8212; Newsroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/07\/29\/keeping-unmc-on-a-fiscally-responsible-path\/embed\/#?secret=EWX1JhJtgE#?secret=UjJaKPXkVN\" data-secret=\"UjJaKPXkVN\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As federal research funding shifted, UNMC increased its private research funding more than 70% in the last fiscal year. Initiatives such as the Kearney health sciences facility and Project Health set the stage for UNMC&#8217;s enrollment to continue growing to meet the state&#8217;s health care needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\"
