{"id":128783,"date":"2026-01-12T01:56:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T07:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=128783"},"modified":"2026-01-09T12:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T18:03:44","slug":"nominations-due-by-jan-26-for-gold-humanism-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/12\/nominations-due-by-jan-26-for-gold-humanism-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Nominations due by Jan. 26 for Gold Humanism Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Nominations are being accepted for UNMC\u2019s Gold Humanism Honor Society Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Faculty Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award recognizes UNMC College of Medicine faculty members who demonstrate both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care and who show respect for patients, their families and health care colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gold Foundation launched this award in 1991 at Columbia University College of Physicians &amp; Surgeons. The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey began replicating these awards nationwide in 1998, with participation from The Gold Foundation. In 2003, thanks to a generous donation from Leonard Tow, these awards became solely sponsored and administered by The Gold Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominations close at 8 a.m. on Jan. 26. The award recipient will be recognized by the UNMC chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society later in the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligible candidates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rank: All full-time and part-time UNMC College of Medicine faculty members are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience: Member of UNMC faculty for two or more years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-nomination is not permitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nomination and selection should reflect the candidate\u2019s commitment to humanism and patient-centered care. Nominees should create and foster a health care environment that is kind, safe and trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MD or DO and\/or a faculty member with substantial clinical teaching responsibilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serves as a role model \u2014 illustrates professional behavior by example.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approachable and accessible to students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welcomes opportunities for teaching and one-on-one mentorships with students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exhibits enthusiasm and skill in professional and personal interactions with students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shows respect for everyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse backgrounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Displays effective communication and listening skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understands patients\u2019 need for interpretation of complex medical diagnoses and treatments and makes an effort to ensure patient comprehension \u2014 shows respect for the patient\u2019s viewpoint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitive to the patients\u2019 psychological well-being.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effectively identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engenders trust and confidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adheres to professional and ethical standards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Committed to reflection and objective self-evaluation of his\/her skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a
