{"id":129009,"date":"2026-01-20T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=129009"},"modified":"2026-01-19T10:35:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T16:35:17","slug":"nursing-conference-to-address-hope-and-harm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/20\/nursing-conference-to-address-hope-and-harm\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing conference to address \u2018hope and harm\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The UNMC College of Nursing Continuing interProfessional Development and Innovation will present the upcoming conference \u201cHope and Harm: Navigating Substances that Shape the Mind Across the Lifespan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This accredited continuing education event will be Friday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with in-person sessions hosted at both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Innovation Conference Center and University of Nebraska at Kearney Health Science Education Complex, as well as a premium livestream package offering 60-day on-demand access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed for advanced practice providers and nurses, this regional conference addresses the relationship between healing and harm in the use of psychotropic and controlled substances from pregnancy through older adulthood. Attendees will explore the latest evidence-based practices in prescribing, deprescribing and supporting individuals affected by psychiatric and substance-related conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conference highlights include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expert-led sessions on antipsychotics, ADHD medications and psychiatric treatment during pregnancy and lactation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-depth discussions on substance use in pregnancy and deprescribing in older adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A focus on rural access to medication-assisted treatment and the ethical challenges of polypharmacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presentations from both Lincoln and Kearney locations, fostering statewide collaboration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will leave equipped to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply evidence-based pharmacologic principles to optimize safe and effective prescribing of psychotropic and controlled medications across the lifespan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate ethical, social and cultural factors that influence prescribing, deprescribing and access to behavioral health and substance use treatments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrate interprofessional communication and collaboration strategies to enhance safety, reduce stigma and promote holistic patient-centered care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyze population-level barriers including rural access, perinatal risk and geriatric polypharmacy to identify opportunities for equitable care delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Health care professionals will gain insights to improve patient outcomes and navigate the evolving landscape of behavioral health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early registration pricing is effective through March 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information and to register, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/app1.unmc.edu\/cne\/26CE00010\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"the conference website at this link., opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the conference website at this link.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 6.25 ANCC contact hours.
