{"id":129708,"date":"2026-02-09T09:18:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T15:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=129708"},"modified":"2026-02-09T09:18:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T15:18:55","slug":"mobile-game-zoodemic-turns-public-health-education-into-adventure-for-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/02\/09\/mobile-game-zoodemic-turns-public-health-education-into-adventure-for-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile game &#8216;Zoodemic&#8217; turns public health education into adventure for teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) have launched \u201cZoodemic,\u201d a free mobile app that transforms public health education into a fast-paced, interactive game for middle and high school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed to meet kids where they are \u2013 on their phones \u2013 Zoodemic challenges players to survive waves of infectious diseases, from the basics of germs to emerging threats like avian flu and measles. As players level up, they unlock real-world knowledge about hygiene, zoonotic diseases and outbreak prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not just teaching science \u2013 we\u2019re sparking curiosity,\u201d said Ali S. Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health. \u201cZoodemic is a fun, engaging way to help youth understand how to stay safe around animals, protect their health, and guard against emerging infectious diseases. It might even inspire the next generation of public health leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed with students from UNO\u2019s Center for Management of IT in the UNO College of Information Science &amp; Technology and Omaha-based tech firm NebDev, the app is built to evolve. Thanks to dynamic backend updates built by NebDev, new levels can be released in response to current outbreaks and public health needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Deepak Khazanchi, executive director of CMIT, \u201cZoodemic reflects how digital innovation can support public health education and readiness. CMIT and UNO students designed and developed the app to make complex public health concepts accessible and engaging for young learners. This is one example of a product built in CMIT over two decades of its existence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMobile games are part of kids\u2019 daily lives,\u201d said Alexandra Todd, health policy analyst at UNMC. \u201cSo we embedded accurate, accessible health education into a format they already love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nebraska Division of Public Health and Nebraska State Health Department also are on board, with grant support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cZoodemic is a unique and educational way for our community to learn about zoonotic diseases and vaccinations,\u201d said Robin Williams, Nebraska Division of Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoodemic is now available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>As Nebraska\u2019s only public academic health science center, the University of Nebraska Medical Center enrolls more than 4,800 students across six colleges, two institutes and a graduate studies program.
