{"id":130325,"date":"2026-03-06T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=130325"},"modified":"2026-03-19T13:18:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T18:18:06","slug":"international-college-of-surgeons-section-to-meet-in-omaha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/03\/06\/international-college-of-surgeons-section-to-meet-in-omaha\/","title":{"rendered":"International College of Surgeons section to meet in Omaha"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Omaha will host the International College of Surgeons-U.S. Section meeting this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICS, headquartered in Chicago, was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, by Max Thorek, MD, in 1935. The organization has nearly 60 sections throughout the world with several thousand members, and its aim is to foster collaboration between surgeons throughout the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joshua Mammen, MD, PhD, president of the U.S. section of the ICS, physician-in-chief with the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Merle M. Musselman Centennial Professor of Surgery and chief of the UNMC Division of Surgical Oncology, will host the event. It will be held at the Marriott in downtown Omaha from March 9-11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mammen will invite attendees on a tour of the National Cancer Institute-designated Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center during the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe International College of Surgeons is committed to unifying surgeons and related specialists throughout the world to promote surgical excellence for the benefit of all people,\u201d Dr. Mammen said. \u201cI am honored to host the meeting this year of the U.S. Section in my hometown of Omaha.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, said: \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to welcome the International College of Surgeons to Omaha. Congratulations to Dr. Mammen for hosting this meeting, and thank you to our faculty who provide invaluable leadership to the surgical profession. We look forward to the exchange of ideas and innovations that will help strengthen surgical care for the patients and communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to speakers from across the country, international speakers at the event will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nicolas Zucchini, MD, of the University of Trieste and Cattinara Hospital in Trieste, Italy, who will discuss \u201cSurgical Simulation at the TROGSS ITP: Synthetic Models vs. Biologic Tissue &#8211; Critical Appraisal of Available Tools.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Michail Koutentakis, MD, of the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, who will speak on \u201cThe CARS 3.0, CALS, and CAES Curricula: The Future of Simulation with AI and Human Judgment.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Prominent invited lectures from the United States include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patricia Numann, MD, past president of the American College of Surgeons<br>who will speak on \u201cPutting Your Best Foot Forward.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waddah Al-Refaie, MD, chair of surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine speaking on \u201cImproving Rural and International Care.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benedict Nwomeh, MD, director of the Global Surgery Program at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center who will speak on \u201cRethinking Surgical Certification: the ABS Non-Traditional Pathway and the Future of Surgical Training.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ficsonline.org\/i4a\/forms\/index.cfm?id=344\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Learn more about the program at this link., opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the program at this link.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Thavam Thambi-Pillai, MD, president of the international organization and a professor of surgery at the University of South Dakota, will attend the event.
