Dr. Sorrell died May 25, 2024, at the age of 88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, and Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, announced the creation of the \u201cMichael F. Sorrell, MD, Distinguished Lectureship in Hepatology\u201d at a celebratory dinner Feb. 26 at Happy Hollow Country Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the event, Mark Rupp, MD, interim chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, expressed pride and gratitude for the lectureship and for Dr. Sorrell\u2019s significant contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not only launching a new academic tradition but also honoring a legacy of excellence and innovation in hepatology and liver transplantation,\u201d Dr. Rupp said. \u201cDr. Michael Sorrell was a remarkable man who contributed greatly to the success of the internal medicine department and to the growth of UNMC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fedja Rochling, MBBCh, chief of the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, said Dr. Sorrell was \u201cwithout a doubt, a leader in the field of hepatology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe made a true impact beyond the state borders and that impact lives on in many liver transplantation programs worldwide,\u201d he said. \u201cThis lectureship provides the division and department with the resources to invite a preeminent leader in liver disease to educate our learners at all levels on topics of liver disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure data-wp-context=\"{&quot;imageId&quot;:&quot;69eaa58314e46&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-key=\"69eaa58314e46\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-lightbox-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SorrellLecture031226-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"From left, Marco Olivera-Martinez, MD, the Michael F. More than 170 people attended in person and via Zoom as he spoke on the topic \u201cTransplant FITness: The Role of Prehabilitation in Expanding the Liver Transplant Pool\u201d at a grand rounds presentation on Feb. 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Rupp said the endowed lectureship is an ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering discovery and inspiring the next generation of physicians and scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It ensures that, year after year, we will not only gather to celebrate the career and contributions of Dr. Sorrell, but we\u2019ll also be working with the visiting lectureship honoree in exchanging ideas, challenging assumptions and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in medicine,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we begin this tradition, let us remember that the true measure of our success will be found in the knowledge we share and the lives that are improved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The endowed lectureship fund is made possible with the generosity of the
