{"id":130619,"date":"2026-03-18T01:56:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T06:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=130619"},"modified":"2026-03-17T15:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T20:23:16","slug":"healing-arts-to-feature-into-whooperland-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/03\/18\/healing-arts-to-feature-into-whooperland-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Healing Arts to feature \u2018Into Whooperland\u2019 exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The gallery space on Level 1 of the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will host the exhibition \u201cInto Whooperland \u2013 Michael Forsberg,\u201d through Aug. 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInto Whooperland\u201d is a photo documentary exhibition dedicated to visualizing the plight of the whooping crane. The whooping crane is the rarest of 15 crane species worldwide and one of just two crane species native to North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1940s, there were fewer than 20 whooping cranes left. Today, there are about 830 in wild and captive populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forsberg\u2019s photographic expedition with whooping cranes follows their journey of conservation and strength. Forsberg has traveled roughly 50,000 miles on what he calls the \u201cWhooper Highway,\u201d an ancient north-south pathway from whooping crane wintering grounds on the Texas Gulf Coast through the Great Plains to summer nesting grounds in Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has amassed more than 100,000 photographs, 15 of which are featured in this exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The images reveal the lives of these rare birds as they navigate caring for chicks, defending breeding territory, climate change and the impacts of alternative and fossil fuel energies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese photographs demonstrate how whooping cranes link habitats and people along their flyways, creating a community,\u201d Forsberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on their place in a deeply interconnected world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forsberg is a Nebraskan whose 30-year career as a photographer and conservationist has been dedicated to wildlife and conservation stories in North America&#8217;s Great Plains. His images have been featured in publications including&nbsp;Audubon,&nbsp;National Geographic,&nbsp;Nature Conservancy and Sierra magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forsberg is the author and photographer of \u201cInto Whooperland \u2013 A Photographer\u2019s Journey with Whooping Cranes\u201d (2024), from which this exhibition features select photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC and Nebraska Medicine\u2019s Healing Arts Program thanked Michael Forsberg Photography for the loan of the artworks and the exhibition sponsor, The Claire M.
