{"id":130913,"date":"2026-04-03T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=130913"},"modified":"2026-04-04T11:16:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T16:16:08","slug":"unmc-joins-new-u-s-emergency-preparedness-and-response-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/04\/03\/unmc-joins-new-u-s-emergency-preparedness-and-response-network\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC joins U.S. emergency preparedness, response network"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Working in partnership with 10 major regional and national health institutions with deep experience and expertise,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projectecho.unm.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Project ECHO at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project ECHO at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center<\/a>&nbsp;will facilitate a new initiative focused on bolstering emergency preparedness and response capacity across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by a grant from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Wood Johnson Foundation<\/a>, the project connects local, regional and national partners \u2013 including UNMC \u2013 in a virtual learning and action community&nbsp;to share best practices and to improve data sharing, coordination and communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNMC&#8217;s Project ECHO team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Angie Vasa, Project ECHO program director for UNMC, director for the Emergency Preparedness and Special Pathogen Programs at Nebraska Medicine and Global Center for Health Security scholar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ryan Draper, senior administrative assistant, UNMC Global Center for Health Security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nada Fadul, MD, professor of infectious diseases at UNMC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jackson Gruber, regional emerging special pathogens program manager, Nebraska Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Angela Hewlett, MD, medical director for the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and Global Center for Health Security scholar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>James Lawler, MD, associate director of international programs and innovation, UNMC Global Center for Health Security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Angie Ling, executive director, Region VII Disaster Health Response Ecosystem based at the med center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stefanie Neumann, communications and website coordinator, UNMC Global Center for Health Security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Emergency Preparedness and Response Learning and Action Network will support 10 regional programs&nbsp;\u2013 each led by a regional partner \u2013 that will focus on locally relevant health care preparedness and response priorities. These 10 programs will then form one larger national network to share real-time information and best practices, align strategy, coordinate response and strengthen the Emergency Preparedness and Response workforce through training, mentorship, and shared resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with UNMC, the other regional partners participating in the network are:&nbsp;Cedars-Sinai Medical Center&nbsp;of California,&nbsp;Corewell Health&nbsp;of Michigan,&nbsp;Denver Health and Hospital Authority,&nbsp;Emory University&nbsp;in Georgia,&nbsp;Johns Hopkins University&nbsp;in Maryland,&nbsp;Massachusetts General Hospital,&nbsp;NYC Health + Hospitals\/Bellevue,&nbsp;Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children\u2019s Hospital&nbsp;in Washington and the&nbsp;University of Texas Medical Branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe network is a direct response to recent public health crises: the COVID-19 pandemic, climate disasters, and ongoing disruptions in policy and data structures,\u201d said Bruce Struminger, MD,&nbsp;director of global health initiatives&nbsp;at Project ECHO. \u201cThese challenges both expose and contribute to fragmentation in our current preparedness and response systems that need our immediate attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angela Hewlett, MD, medical director for the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, the George W. Orr MD and Linda Orr Chair in Health Security and a professor in the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases, said: \u201cOur team appreciates the opportunity to partner with Project ECHO and our expert colleagues from across the United States. We look forward to sharing our experience in biopreparedness and biocontainment, and gaining insights from our colleagues on their efforts to build stronger response networks and enhance our collective ability to address current and emerging threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the start, the network will learn from, coordinate and engage directly with other efforts underway to shore up preparedness and response in the United States and globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to support this effort \u2014 being spearheaded by the team at Project ECHO \u2013 because it\u2019s clear-eyed about building the approach we need for the time we\u2019re in,\u201d said Nancy Barrand, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. \u201cIt builds from previous work by the ECHO team during the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 partnering with the federal government and health organizations across the country \u2014 to share critical, real-time learning.
