On March 20, 2026, the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology welcomed 15 new residents from across the nation. These newly matched residents bring a diverse set of skills and experiences, and we are proud to welcome these phenomenal future colleagues to the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNMC 2026 Match Day celebration was held at the Omaha Design Center, where four of the senior medical students at UNMC’s College of Medicine opened their envelopes to find they had matched to the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 Main Residency Match\u00ae – known as Match Day – is an annual rite of passage for medical students across the country. On this day, students learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training, depending on their chosen medical specialty. Students are matched through a computer algorithm that aligns their residency program preferences with the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Eric Van Der Zwaag and Jeffrey Garvey, both UNMC College of Medicine students, the choice to stay was clear. Garvey cited the anesthesiology department’s specialized training opportunities as a key factor in his decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“UNMC represents home to me and offers an outstanding training environment, particularly its exceptional liver transplant program, which aligns closely with my primary fellowship interest,” Garvey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Rappolt, also a UNMC College of Medicine student, is looking forward to building on his medical school experience as he transitions into residency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“UNMC has been a fantastic place to learn and train as a medical student, and I look forward to continuing my growth as a physician through residency here,” Rappolt said. “The program has great variety in the cases it provides trainees, and the preparation for fellowship and beyond is what I was looking for when I picked a residency program. My family has also built a great life here in Omaha, and we are excited to stay.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucas Tesnohlidek, who matched from the University of Washington School of Medicine, had a personal connection to the program that helped seal the deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I chose UNMC because I was really impressed during my interview by how down-to-earth everyone was and the strong learning opportunities available,” Tesnohlidek said. “Additionally, my sister is a resident here a few years ahead of me, and her experience gave me a lot of confidence that this is an excellent program in a great city.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residency Program Director Andrea Dutoit, MD, said this year’s match reflects both the growing competitiveness of the specialty and the exceptional quality of applicants it is attracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We continue to see a growing number of highly qualified, motivated candidates drawn to anesthesiology,” Dr. Dutoit said. “This year’s class stands out for its talent, depth of experience, and commitment to patient care.
