{"id":131888,"date":"2026-05-06T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=131888"},"modified":"2026-05-05T11:33:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:33:04","slug":"college-of-nursing-continues-building-pathways-to-the-profession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/06\/college-of-nursing-continues-building-pathways-to-the-profession\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC College of Nursing continues building pathways to the profession"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The UNMC College of Nursing continues looking westward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Dean Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, and Cathrin Carrithers, DNP, assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division, traveled to McCook to meet with Grant Norgaard, superintendent of McCook Public Schools, and Craig Dickes, principal of McCook Senior High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their purpose: To sign a new memorandum of understanding that will allow the UNMC College of Nursing to provide information and advisement regarding admission to the college\u2019s BSN program to students enrolled at McCook Senior High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a part of the agreement, McCook high school students can receive a reserved seat in the BSN&nbsp;program,&nbsp;so&nbsp;long as&nbsp;they meet all&nbsp;nursing&nbsp;prerequisite requirements and complete the&nbsp;UNMC College of Nursing\u2019s&nbsp;admission process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MOU is the fourth in a series that the college has signed with Nebraska high schools as an attempt to create a robust pipeline to the UNMC College of Nursing\u2019s Western Nebraska, Norfolk and Kearney divisions for Nebraska students in the rural part of the state who want to become nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other MOUs have been signed with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gering Public High School.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scottsbluff Public High School.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pathways 2 Tomorrow, a consortium of 25 high schools (16 public and nine private).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing partnerships are the latest effort by UNMC to address the state\u2019s nursing shortage, a priority of Dr. Sharp-McHenry\u2019s since she arrived at UNMC in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"UNMC College of Nursing Dean Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, speaks at the McCook MOU signing.\" class=\"wp-image-131889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SharpMcHenryMcCook050526.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">UNMC College of Nursing Dean Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, speaks at the McCook MOU signing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a first-generation college student raised in rural Arkansas, I understand the value of educational opportunities,\u201d Dr. Sharp-McHenry said. \u201cBuilding strong partnerships with our rural school systems is more than outreach, it\u2019s an investment in the future of Nebraskans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy creating early pathways into our UNMC College of Nursing, we are opening doors for local students to see themselves as future nurses and leaders within their own communities. These collaborations ensure that talent is nurtured close to home, access to opportunity is expanded and the next generation of nurses reflects the strength and diversity of the communities they will serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, said he was excited to see Dr. Sharp-McHenry\u2019s efforts to build the state\u2019s nursing workforce, particularly in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDean Sharp-McHenry identified this as a challenge for our state even before arriving on campus, and she and the college have been tireless in exploring ways to enhance the pathways to a nursing career for our Nebraska high school students,\u201d he said. \u201cThese MOUs are just one aspect of her innovative approach to addressing this need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other college efforts have included scholarships, expansion to twice-yearly admissions and a pathway collaboration with the University of Nebraska at Omaha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to build these partnerships across rural
