Jasmine Marcelin, MD, and Sarosh Rana, MD, have been selected for the 2026-2027 class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine\u00ae<\/sup> (ELAM) program at Drexel University College of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are among 99 ELAM fellows selected nationally from academic health centers across North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Dr. Marcelin, associate professor of infectious diseases and vice chair for belonging and community engagement in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, the fellowship builds on nearly a decade of leadership at UNMC focused on mentorship, community partnerships and health communication. Her Institutional Action Project will center on developing a curriculum to equip health professions students and faculty with skills in accessible, patient- and community-centered health and science communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Public trust in science, medicine and health care institutions is declining, with downstream consequences for patient outcomes, community confidence and institutional credibility,” Dr. Marcelin said. “Trust can be rebuilt – and more importantly, proactively cultivated. I see UNMC as a leader in addressing this challenge by developing a diverse cadre of clinicians and scientists who communicate health and science with clarity, compassion and equity across clinical, community and public contexts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Marcelin described the fellowship as closely aligned with her leadership philosophy. “ELAM’s curriculum offers essential training for navigating today’s complex academic health environments. Its emphasis on cross-disciplinary networks and leadership coaching aligns closely with my commitment to mentorship, coalition building and institutional stewardship.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F<\/strong>or Dr. Rana, the Chris J. and Marie A. Olson Endowed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the timing of the fellowship coincides with her new role as department chair. Her Institutional Action Project – called EMBRACE Nebraska, short for Excellence in Maternal Birth Outcomes through Rigorous Assessment and Community Engagement – will focus on developing a comprehensive maternal health equity initiative across Nebraska’s diverse communities, from rural areas with limited access to high-risk obstetric care to urban populations facing significant health disparities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As I begin my tenure as the Olson Endowed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UNMC, I recognized that effective departmental transformation requires more than clinical expertise – it demands sophisticated executive leadership capabilities,” Dr. Rana said. “ELAM offers precisely the skills I need at this critical juncture.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Rana’s Institutional Action Project draws directly on her research and clinical work. “My research on angiogenic biomarkers in preeclampsia taught me that breakthrough innovations require both scientific rigor and implementation strategy,” she said. “I bring this same approach to institutional leadership: identify problems through rigorous analysis, develop evidence-based solutions, build coalitions, and create sustainable systems for implementation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
