{"id":131986,"date":"2026-05-12T18:29:55","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T23:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=131986"},"modified":"2026-05-12T18:29:57","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T23:29:57","slug":"unmc-department-of-anesthesiology-residents-recognized-for-excellence-at-2026-midwest-anesthesia-resident-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/05\/12\/unmc-department-of-anesthesiology-residents-recognized-for-excellence-at-2026-midwest-anesthesia-resident-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Anesthesiology residents recognized for excellence at 2026 MARC event"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>UNMC medical students and anesthesiology residents delivered exceptional presentations at the annual Midwest Anesthesia Resident Conference, held April 17-19 in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, sponsored by the Association of Midwest Academic Anesthesia Chairs (AMAAC) and hosted by Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University &#8211; MetroHealth Medical Center and University Hospitals of Cleveland &#8211; Case Medical Center, brought together trainees and faculty from across the region in a collaborative, educational setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of MARC is to support and promote resident and student research, foster scholarly exchange and provide a platform for residents to present challenging clinical cases and innovative research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residency Program Director Andrea Dutoit, MD, highlighted the value of the conference for trainees. &#8220;The MARC is a fantastic opportunity for our residents and medical students to research and present a challenging anesthetic case or ongoing research project at a regional conference in an incredibly supportive setting of their peers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presentations were evaluated by a panel of judges, with awards given for first, second and third place in both oral and poster presentation categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC participants continued the department&#8217;s strong tradition of academic excellence at the conference. This year, two residents and a medical student were recognized for their outstanding work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ian South, MD<\/strong> \u2013 Third place, obstetrical category: &#8220;Epidural anesthesia for labor analgesia and cesarean section in a patient with myotonia congenita&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kari Shad, M3<\/strong> \u2013 Third place, pediatric category: &#8220;Anesthetic management of severe meningomyelocele in a neonate&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Melanie Kaiser, MD<\/strong> \u2013 Third place, airway category: &#8220;Airway management for thoracic surgery in the setting of tracheostomy and retropharyngeal abscess&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional UNMC presentations included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nicholas St. Onge, M3<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;Short-term outcomes of CRRT in orthotopic liver transplantation&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kalkena Sivanesam, MD<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;A dry spinal tap after a labor epidural&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shelby Bauer, MD<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;Stellate ganglion block for persistent ventricular fibrillation&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Abigail Tesnohlidek, MD<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;Spinal anesthesia for noncardiac surgery in an infant with single-ventricle glenn physiology&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carl Skoog, MD<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;Avoiding sugammadex: neuromuscular blockade reversal in pregnancy&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nathaniel Pester,
