{"id":132695,"date":"2026-06-01T12:05:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T17:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=132695"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T19:37:07","slug":"meet-the-kearney-trailblazers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/06\/01\/meet-the-kearney-trailblazers\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Kearney trailblazers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>In August 2025, nine trailblazers embarked upon the UNMC College of Pharmacy\u2019s PharmD program as UNMC\u2019s first-ever pharmacy class in Kearney, Nebraska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA proud and historic milestone,\u201d said the program\u2019s associate dean, Linda Sobeski, PharmD. Kyle Meyer, PhD, Armstrong Family Distinguished Chair of Rural Healthcare Workforce Strategy, called it: \u201cA tangible step toward fully realizing the promise of the Kearney expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/HealthScienceEducationCenterII051326-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An exterior photo of the Health Science Education Center II building at the Douglas A. Kristensen Rural Health Education Complex on the UNMC Kearney campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But the first pharmacy students in Kearney did more than make history. \u201cI have had an amazing experience at UNMC so far,\u201d said Kearney P1 Ella Johnson, who lauded technology, curriculum and culture in keeping the Kearney trailblazers connected with their counterparts 170 miles away on UNMC\u2019s Omaha campus. And yet, \u201cBeing a part of a smaller campus has allowed me to make stronger connections with my peers and the staff. While the curriculum has been challenging, I have learned so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC\u2019s expansion of its PharmD program to Kearney is expected to produce far-reaching ripple effects including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improved access to pharmacy education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer geographic barriers for students who cannot relocate to Omaha \u2014 or who do not want to \u2014 including nontraditional learners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More locally trained pharmacists who are more likely to stay and practice in rural communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sustainable pharmacist pipeline for greater Nebraska.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stronger partnerships with rural hospitals, clinics and pharmacies through experiential training and shared service models.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stronger ties with local communities throughout the state via outreach and education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opportunities to further develop innovative pharmacy practice models and community-based solutions. Students in Kearney undertake the same curriculum as their counterparts in Omaha, often synchronously through distance-learning technology. Instructors conduct training from both the Omaha and Kearney campuses, giving students a mix of in-person and blended technology-based learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don Klepser, PhD, the Joseph D. Williams Endowed Dean of the UNMC College of Pharmacy, likes to call it \u201ctwo locations, one program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Nebraska at Kearney graduate Kiernan Bierman said continuing her pharmacy education on the Kearney campus was a no-brainer. \u201cA lot of us here come from more rural areas, and there is a drive to return and help serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Kearney_Connect052726.jpg\" alt=\"Group photo.
