Campus Against Cancer brings the fight against cancer directly to students by inspiring advocacy, fundraising, and encouraging education.  With nearly 160 members and a dedicated executive team, the group has focused on volunteerism, cancer prevention, professional development, and community partnerships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the year, Campus Against Cancer actively supported the American Cancer Society by volunteering at the Relay for Life Greater Omaha, helping advance cancer awareness and fundraising efforts.\u00a0\u00a0A significant portion\u00a0of the group\u2019s work also\u00a0centered on ongoing volunteer engagement with Hope Lodge, providing comfort and community to guests\u00a0receiving\u00a0cancer treatment away from home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These efforts included multiple Cooking Up Hope events where members prepared warm pasta and soup meals, arts and crafts activities such as decorating eggs, creating a gratitude tree for guests to express what they are thankful for, and a Holiday Card Drive delivering handwritten messages of encouragement during the holiday season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to service initiatives, Campus Against Cancer prioritized cancer education and prevention by hosting a Skin Cancer Prevention Event, offering participants practical UV safety tips and wellness items like sunscreen and SPF lip balm.  This event was made possible through collaboration with campus and community partners including the Buffett Cancer Center Community Outreach & Engagement Office, Dermatology Interest Group (SPOTS), Graduate Student Association, Student Life Involvement and Development Office, and the Office of Community Engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional development remained a priority through a speaker series featuring biotechnology industry leaders from Streck, highlighting innovation in cancer research and offering students valuable exposure to career pathways beyond academia.  To support these efforts, the group successfully secured nearly $1,300 in funding through the Student Senate and the Office of Community Engagement, with additional material support from the NCI-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center\u2019s Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination Office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of its impact, Campus Against Cancer was awarded the Bronze Community Impact Award, and Hope Lodge was honored with the Community Partner Award at the UNMC iTEACH Awards.  These recognitions are a testament to the power of collaboration and service-driven leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
