Designed to foster peer relationships, the Gathering provides youth with opportunities to connect with fellow students, gain traditional Native knowledge and skills, and explore future career and college pathways.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gathering centers on honoring the Sacred Hoop\u2014body, spirit,&nbsp;heart&nbsp;and mind. Sessions are intentionally designed to address each of these&nbsp;elements, with&nbsp;hands-on&nbsp;activities and workshops highlighting&nbsp;the importance of balance and well-being while empowering participants to envision strong futures for themselves and their communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s event on April 15,\u00a02026,\u00a0welcomed 300 total attendees\u00a0representing\u00a0Omaha Public Schools, Lincoln Public Schools, Bancroft-Rosalie, Omaha Nation, West Side, Valentine, South Sioux City, Winnebago, and\u00a0Walthill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gathering\u00a0included a Career &amp; Vendor Fair, where youth explored resources and educational opportunities,\u00a0including\u00a0information\u00a0from the UNMC\u2019s Youth Enjoy Science Program\u00a0(YES).\u00a0\u00a0The YES Program is a\u00a0national\u00a0research education initiative funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI); its purpose\u00a0is to\u00a0encourage\u00a0students to\u00a0explore education and careers in science,\u00a0health\u00a0and research, with a strong emphasis in cancer-related fields.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these youth shared a powerful experience of cultural pride and connection, and of learning what the&nbsp;NCI-designated&nbsp;Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and YES Program offers for them and their communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gathering featured breakout sessions, including\u00a0<em>Igniting Interest in Research Careers: Pathways in the Youth Enjoy Science Program<\/em>\u00a0by Dr. Aislinn Rookwood, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Public Health, and Native American Populations and Cancer Care presented by Rachel Hack, M.Ed., from Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (FPBCC) Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination Office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kali Ratigan (Program Coordinator) also attended on behalf of the YES Program, and Lauren Garcia (Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist) met with attendees at the event as the representative of the FPBCC\u2019s Community Outreach and Engagement\u00a0team. A total of 70 students, 6 teachers, and chaperones attended the YES and FPBCC presentations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nebraska Native Youth Gathering is an annual event that began in 2012\u20132013 and is designed for students in grades 7\u201312. This is a free event. Pre-registration is\u00a0required. Registration usually opens in early April.
