{"id":133091,"date":"2026-06-17T07:52:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T12:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=133091"},"modified":"2026-06-17T08:40:47","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:40:47","slug":"college-schedule-remains-hot-and-cool-during-summer-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/06\/17\/college-schedule-remains-hot-and-cool-during-summer-months\/","title":{"rendered":"College schedule remains hot, and cool, during summer months"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summertime, and the living is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not quite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not at the UNMC College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dub Vogt, DDS, associate dean for student affairs, admissions, alumni and external relations, is about as active as ever. Dr. Vogt said his summer months are often spent immersed in reviewing dental school applications, interviewing advanced standing dental applicants, and writing institutional letters of evaluation for students and alums pursuing residencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSummer is a busy time of year for me personally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer term is a continuation of substantial planning by the faculty toward course development, clinical service enhancements and personal research interests, said Julie Marshall, DDS, associate dean for education. Kelsey Sasse, DDS, director of student success and wellness, is using the summer to develop activities to support faculty, students, staff and the community, including the start of a running group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff invest significant effort in preparing simulation spaces, classroom areas and equipment and instruments, before new students arrive in August for orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The college and its office are in full operation during the summer months. Patient care and emergency services continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, several grad programs use the summer to do extended rotations. For example, first-year periodontal residents spend the month of June completing a general anesthesia rotation with the Omaha VA Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System. July 1 marks the arrival of new residents to dental specialty programs, including AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) and hospital-based GPR (General Practice Residency).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the college continues its unique summer research experience for each dental hygiene and dentistry student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSummer is the launch of many student research projects mentored by the COD faculty, including those funded by the COD Student Research Fellowships,\u201d Dr. Marshall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These projects will be presented at UNMC College of Dentistry Research Day in February. And students funded by student research fellowships also will submit their abstracts to national meetings and at forums throughout the following academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty conducting research use the summer as crucial prep time for National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposals, which are traditionally due in June and November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dental and dental hygiene students attend didactic and laboratory courses during the summer months. This summer, the college has made more scanners available for both preclinical and clinical use, with an array of software capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-July, the college conducts its interview process for internationally trained dentists hoping to be accepted into UNMC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/dentistry\/programs\/advanced-standing\/index.html\">advanced standing dentistry program<\/a>, as Dr. Vogt noted earlier in this story. It\u2019s a full day of skills testing, personal interviews, hands-on experiences and engagement with current students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The college is about as busy in summer as it is at nearly any time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest nod to the season may be finding people enjoying outdoor courtyard space and the adjacent UNL Botanical Garden and Arboretum. And of course, enjoying the ultimate summer treat, ice cream from the UNL Dairy Store next door.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College faculty, residents, students
