{"id":133156,"date":"2026-06-18T01:56:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T06:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=133156"},"modified":"2026-06-17T14:37:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:37:16","slug":"rheumatology-services-now-offered-at-sharing-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/06\/18\/rheumatology-services-now-offered-at-sharing-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Rheumatology services now offered at SHARING Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNMC Division of Rheumatology and Immunology now offers its services at the SHARING Clinic, UNMC\u2019s student-run free clinic that provides&nbsp;free or low-cost healthcare&nbsp;to underserved populations in the Omaha area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty from the division saw their first patients at the clinic in April. They will be scheduled quarterly on Tuesday nights in the Family Medicine SHARING Clinic on the third floor of the Durham Outpatient Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rheumatology services at the clinic are led by Tina Mahajan, MD, assistant professor of rheumatology and immunology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the clinic, we see patients with autoimmune conditions, in particular inflammatory arthritis,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is a need for specialized care in patients with autoimmune disease but not everyone has access. We are trying to extend access to uninsured patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryant England, MD, PhD, interim chief of the division of rheumatology and immunology, said he is grateful to his team for taking the initiative to add their services to the clinic schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are delighted to offer rheumatology care in the SHARING Clinic to help the underserved in our community living with rheumatic diseases,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sharing\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SHARING (Student Health Alliance Reaching Indigent Needy Groups) Clinics, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHARING (Student Health Alliance Reaching Indigent Needy Groups) Clinics<\/a> are staffed by student providers from each of the academic disciplines at UNMC. This multidisciplinary approach provides comprehensive care for patients in need over the age of 18 and a learning environment for student providers. Faculty providers are present at all clinics to ensure each patient receives proper care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Mahajan said staffing the clinic provides a rich learning experience for faculty, fellows and medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s organized and led by healthcare students across various disciplines, so it\u2019s a valuable educational opportunity,\u201d Dr. Mahajan said. \u201cWe see patients with medical students and physician assistant students, as well as pharmacy, occupational therapy and physical therapy students. The students not only learn from faculty and fellows but also from each other in an interprofessional setting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Rheumatology services at the SHARING Clinic will next be offered July 14. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sharing\/patient-care\/sharing-clinic.html\" type=\"link\"
