{"id":133265,"date":"2026-06-18T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=133265"},"modified":"2026-06-17T14:45:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:45:39","slug":"i-can-be-myself-in-a-small-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/06\/18\/i-can-be-myself-in-a-small-town\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I can be myself in a small town\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stories.nufoundation.org\/what-if-that-could-be-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"May Pride of Place publication, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May Pride of Place publication<\/a>, the University of Nebraska Foundation featured this article on Carter Schultz, who is in the inaugural cohort of students enrolled in the UNMC pharmacy program in Kearney.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWell, I was born in a small town<\/em> \/ <em>And I live in a small town<\/em> \/ <em>Probably die in a small town<\/em> \/ <em>Oh, those small communities \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lyrics of John Mellencamp\u2019s 1985 hit song \u201cSmall Town\u201d were written nearly two decades before Carter Schultz was born. But each line of the popular ditty encapsulates how the University of Nebraska at Kearney senior feels about his hometown of Doniphan, Nebraska, and smaller communities in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schultz, who earned a degree in applied health sciences with a minor in public health from UNK, is part of the inaugural cohort of students enrolled in the University of Nebraska Medical Center pharmacy program based at the recently opened, privately supported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nufoundation.org\/unmc-unk-celebrate-opening-of-rural-health-education-complex\/\">Health Science Edu<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nufoundation.org\/unmc-unk-celebrate-opening-of-rural-health-education-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"c, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nufoundation.org\/unmc-unk-celebrate-opening-of-rural-health-education-complex\/\">ation Center<\/a>\u00a0in Kearney. Upon completion of his pharmacy degree, he wants to begin his career at a smaller, community pharmacy where he can create meaningful connections with patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A close-knit communit<\/strong>y<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He chose UNK because he liked the close-knit campus and opportunities available for health science students. UNK is also where his parents, John and Amy, met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love small-town Nebraska,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cI want to go back, not necessarily to Doniphan, but to a small town because that\u2019s where I want to raise a family someday. The small-town feel brings a lot of charm and has definitely shaped me into who I am today. I don\u2019t think you can get a true Nebraska experience unless you\u2019re going to one of these small schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up in Doniphan, a town of approximately 800 people situated between Grand Island and Hastings, provided Schultz with the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities \u2015 three sports, the school musical, band and student government \u2015 which allowed him to diversify his talents and to grow as a leader. Schultz said that small towns provide a level of closeness and community that cannot be duplicated in larger cities. When his neighborhood flooded a few years ago, the community rallied by canceling school so students could assist with filling sandbags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe celebrate everyone\u2019s wins and provide support during their challenges,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cIt\u2019s just so cool to see a community rally around each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel video-embed\">\n\t<div class=\"panel__container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"feature__media feature__media--full\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"feature__video\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XmZ_i5ie3jc\" title=\"This is home | Carter's journey to pharmacy\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"feature__caption feature__caption--line\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Carter Schultz loves small-town Nebraska. As part of the inaugural cohort of students in the UNMC pharmacy program launching this fall in Kearney, he wants to bring meaningful connections to the people he will serve \u2015 in a small town.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Meeting the need for healthcare providers in Nebraska<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One challenge facing smaller Nebraska communities is the shortage of healthcare providers. Current rural healthcare workforce shortages, coupled with the large number of practitioners who are approaching retirement, threaten the availability of health care services due to a lack of providers. UNMC has made rural healthcare a priority through its expansion in Kearney and other initiatives to increase recruitment of rural students to the healthcare professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schultz\u2019s brother, Owen, a sophomore at UNK studying to become a special education teacher, was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy at the age of 12. That experience cultivated Schultz\u2019s interest in the healthcare field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also gave Schultz firsthand insight into how healthcare inequities in rural Nebraska can impact patients and their families. He has a unique understanding of having to make the 2 1\/2-hour drive to Omaha for his brother to be seen by a specialist, then make the same drive back to Doniphan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOmaha and Lincoln have very important resources. But I\u2019ve seen how much of a toll it\u2019s taken on my family having to drive back and forth to access care,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cI want to be a resource, so families don\u2019t have to travel that distance if they don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schultz said his brother\u2019s condition played a significant role in his interest in pursuing healthcare as a profession. However, he wasn\u2019t certain which field he wanted to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The feeling of being home<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he found pharmacy. Schultz took the initiative to job shadow at a pharmacy in Kearney. That led to jobs at several pharmacies, where he discovered how pharmacists can create meaningful connections with customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost people think pharmacists count out pills and fill prescriptions. It\u2019s so much more, especially from a connection side of things,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cThere is a connection with the people coming through that door. You could be the reason they are coming to get the medicine to get better or stay alive. So, it\u2019s much more of a social job than some people realize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schultz gets a warm feeling of being home when he sees the Doniphan water tower on his drive back from Kearney. Even the sounds and smells from the nearby Nebraska State Trapshooting Association range bring him a sense of security \u2015 the kind of comfort he wants his future patrons to feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI truly believe healthcare is the best way to make a positive impact on people\u2019s lives,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cIt\u2019s important for people to not only have access to these services but to have access to professionals who sincerely care about them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cGot nothing against a big town<\/em> \/ <em>Still hayseed enough to say<\/em> \/ <em>Look who\u2019s in the big town<\/em> \/ <em>But my bed is in a small town<\/em> \/ <em>Oh, and that\u2019s good enough for
