{"id":133782,"date":"2026-07-06T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=133782"},"modified":"2026-07-02T10:18:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T15:18:10","slug":"post-disaster-toll-on-mothers-linked-to-worse-child-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/07\/06\/post-disaster-toll-on-mothers-linked-to-worse-child-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-disaster toll on mothers linked to worse child mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new study by UNMC researchers found children\u2019s mental health may be indirectly harmed by their mothers\u2019 experience of a major disaster, through the financial and social losses the disaster causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, from a team led by UNMC College of Public Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/departments\/epidemiology\/facultyandstaff\/ariane-rung.html\">Ariane Ru<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/departments\/epidemiology\/facultyandstaff\/ariane-rung.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"n, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/departments\/epidemiology\/facultyandstaff\/ariane-rung.html\">g, PhD<\/a>, was published June 17 in the open access journal PLOS One.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis study sheds light on how maternal exposure to oil spills can lead to financial and social resource loss among mothers, which may then lead to worse child mental health,&#8221; Dr. Rung said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier studies in Louisiana after the 2010 British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon oil platform explosion and oil spill found that among women, more exposure to the oil spill was associated with higher levels of depression, mental distress and domestic conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing on the aftermath of the event, the UNMC research team drew on data from the Women and Their Children&#8217;s Health (WaTCH) Study, a longitudinal study in seven southern Louisiana parishes. At Wave 1 (2012\u20132014), 445 mothers reported on their physical and economic exposure to the oil spill. At Wave 2 (2014\u20132016), both maternal resource loss and children\u2019s mental health were assessed in the 445 mother-child pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maternal oil spill exposure was not directly associated with children\u2019s mental health outcomes. However, maternal exposure was strongly associated with greater resource loss, which in turn was associated with worse children\u2019s mental health scores. Collectively, maternal oil spill exposure was compatible with an indirect negative effect on children\u2019s mental health, mediated by resource loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNMC team\u2019s findings align with the Conservation of Resources framework, which holds that disasters harm well-being primarily by depleting the financial, social and personal resources people rely on to cope, and that when these losses compound, their effects can extend to the whole family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNMC study is limited by the timespan of the data, collected two to six years after the spill, Dr. Rung said, adding that it is unclear whether findings would generalize to the immediate aftermath of a disaster or to other contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the effect of maternal oil spill exposure on children\u2019s mental health was indirect and modest in magnitude, and because resource loss and children&#8217;s mental health were assessed at the same wave, strict causal conclusions cannot be drawn. The absence of pre-spill baseline mental health data limits the ability to rule out pre-existing differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, the researchers conclude that major disasters such as oil spills may indirectly affect children\u2019s mental health mediated through a pathway of financial and social resource loss. Interventions mitigating resource loss may be vital for protecting children\u2019s mental well-being in the aftermath of disasters, they say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These findings illuminate potential pathways through which oil spills may impact mothers and their children, highlighting in particular the role of financial and social resource loss caused by exposure to an oil spill,\u201d Dr. Rung said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cResearch in this area has often focused on impacts of oil spills on individuals who have had more direct contact with the oil, but our results demonstrate a wider impact on the community. Children especially have been understudied, compared to adults, yet they may be doubly impacted, both through the spill itself and through the adaptive capacity of their
