Fifty-four airport pickups. Scholars from Guam to Northern Virginia. Seventy-eight students and a staff of 17, folded into six weeks of anatomy labs, clinical simulations and health profession-focused Friday activities inside UNMC’s colleges of medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer’s Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) cohort was the last one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNMC has hosted the program since 2006, when former Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Rubens Pamies, MD, helped bring it to campus as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program. It became SHPEP in 2017, when additional health profession tracks were added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, after 37 years as one of the country’s most established pathway initiatives for students underrepresented in health care, SHPEP is ending nationally. Its sole funder for nearly four decades, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is shifting its philanthropic priorities elsewhere, a change the foundation says reflects its own evolving strategy, not the program’s results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Sonja Tutsch-Bryant, PhD, program manager for UNMC’s site for eight years, the partnership’s legacy comes down to a simple idea. “RWJF recognized early that talent is universal, but opportunity is not,” she said. “SHPEP wasn’t about ‘fixing’ students; it was about removing barriers and creating access.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the life of the program, more than 1,600 students have come through UNMC’s site. To date, 223 scholars (14%) went on to attend a UNMC program, and 195 graduated from one, among them Denai Gordon, MD, now a primary care provider in North Omaha who returns each summer to speak to new scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of what set UNMC’s site apart, Dr. Tutsch-Bryant says, was who ran it day to day. Near-peer mentors, often SHPEP alumni themselves, trained for two additional weeks before scholars arrived on campus, learning a concept mentors call the “invisible backpack”: the idea that every scholar carries responsibilities and circumstances a classroom can’t see, and that supporting them starts with finding out what those are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SHPEP\u2019s greatest strength may have been its ability to come full circle, said Dr. Tutsch-Bryant. This year’s program assistant, Stephanie Vuong, a nursing student, began as a SHEPEP scholar, returned as a residence-life lead, then a learning-community lead, before stepping into her current role. She is one of several staff members whose journeys reflect the lasting impact of the program and their desire to invest in the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That spirit of continuity shaped the experience for this year\u2019s scholars as well. For Abhisri Narayanan, an incoming UCLA sophomore pursuing dentistry, one defining moment came in the anatomy lab at UNMC’s College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I always knew that oral health was connected to systemic diseases, but I never got to see it firsthand,” she said. “Everything was truly connected, not just your upper half or your face. That really showed me how important dentistry is in overall well-being.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Tutsch-Bryant says the numbers only tell part of it. “We now have an army of changemakers out there,” she said. \u201cAlumni who became physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and public health leaders, and, for many, near-peer mentors to the cohort behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“SHPEP may be ending, but the work of expanding opportunity is not,” she said. \u201cUNMC’s pathway initiatives will continue, likely with a sharper focus on Nebraska and the region. A mission built around a culture of health doesn’t end with one program. It evolves.”<\/p>\n
