{"id":134462,"date":"2026-08-12T01:59:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T06:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=134462"},"modified":"2026-08-11T15:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T20:45:07","slug":"new-division-chiefs-appointed-in-internal-medicine-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/12\/new-division-chiefs-appointed-in-internal-medicine-department\/","title":{"rendered":"New division chiefs appointed in internal medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hemant Roy, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, has announced leadership changes for three divisions in the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bryant England, MD, PhD, now is chief of the UNMC Division of Rheumatology and Immunology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicole Shonka, MD, now is chief of the UNMC Division of Medical Oncology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matthew Lunning, DO, now is chief of the UNMC Division of Hematology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appointments are effective immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three appointees have held interim chief roles for their respective divisions previously. In November, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/10\/01\/julie-vose-md-to-assume-new-leadership-role-in-lymphoma-research\/\">oncology and hematology division split into two units<\/a>, with Drs. Lunning and Shonka serving as the interim division chiefs. We will champion expanding access to cutting-edge clinical trials and gene and cellular therapies and continue developing the next generation of hematology leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Shonka, who also is a member of the National Cancer Institute-designated Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, said she also plans to uphold the standard of excellence in her division while looking to the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am truly excited and deeply honored to be named division chief of medical oncology,\u201d she said. \u201cThe legacy before me sets a high bar, and I\u2019m ready to rise to the challenge with energy and purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. England said the appointment is especially meaningful as he follows Dr. O\u2019Dell, a mentor who \u201cprofoundly shaped my career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnder Dr. O\u2019Dell\u2019s remarkable 35 years of leadership, the rheumatology and immunology division has grown into an internationally recognized center of excellence,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has expanded to more than 20 faculty members, developed a strong cadre of funded investigators, earned a reputation for outstanding education and mentorship, and built a thriving clinical enterprise that serves patients across multiple sites. With this foundation and incredible faculty and staff, I am excited about the opportunities ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Roy said he is confident about the future direction of these divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am extraordinarily grateful for the willingness of Nicole, Matt and Bryant to serve in these important positions,\u201d Dr. Roy said. \u201cOncology, hematology and rheumatology are very strong, and I am confident that, under their leadership, these divisions will experience an exceptional upward trajectory in all facets of our tripartite mission of research, education and clinical care.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department will host a celebration for the new
