{"id":134519,"date":"2026-08-27T09:05:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=134519"},"modified":"2026-08-27T09:24:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:24:19","slug":"2026-turpen-award-hannah-pflum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/27\/2026-turpen-award-hannah-pflum\/","title":{"rendered":"2026 Turpen Award: Hannah Pflum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannah Pflum, Creighton University graduate and former NE-INBRE student, is the 2026 James Turpen Scholar Excellence Award, given annually to the top graduating student scientist in the Nebraska IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (NE-INBRE) program who plans to attend graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She received the award at August&#8217;s annual INBRE Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pflum\u2019s INBRE project looked at the polarization of microglia during viral infection of the central nervous system with a virus called TMEV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She investigated how specific genes coding for functional microglial markers differ in animals that do and do not get demyelinating disease and whether differential expression of antiviral long noncoding RNAs are important for regulating that differential gene expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research grew from her interest in immunology, as well as neuroscience, and the former Creighton student found a great \u201chometown\u201d mentor in Creighton\u2019s Annemarie Shibata, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking in her lab felt like the perfect culmination of all of my interests, and then I ended up really enjoying the immunology aspect,\u201d Pflum said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She enjoyed it so much, in fact, that she\u2019s decided to continue with immunology as she heads to grad school at the University of Minnesota in its Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology Program for her PhD in immunology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pflum first heard about INBRE while in high school, from her dentist, a former INBRE student. It interested her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve always been fascinated by the act of discovery itself,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I got to college, it was just a logical next step for me to get to my end destination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Shibata, professor of biology at Creighton University and one of Pflum\u2019s mentors, also was at the conference to present the award to Pflum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe award speaks to her capabilities and dedication, her commitment and drive,\u201d Dr. Shibata said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pflum also mentioned Creighton\u2019s Kristen Drescher, PhD, and &nbsp;Gwendalyn King, PhD, as important mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Shibata said that INBRE\u2019s mission \u2013 to train students in research with the intent of helping them succeed in entering graduate school \u2013 is what brings her back to the program year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNE-INBRE helps us to ensure that we have resources at Creighton that help students who want to go to graduate school get to that endpoint,\u201d she said. &#8220;INBRE is a tremendous benefit to Creighton University and our students interested in research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pflum also is a fan of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cINBRE is a great way to meet like-minded individuals, as well as help you discover whether\u00a0research is something you could see as a long-term goal. My first summer at INBRE really was crucial in giving me a \u2018lightbulb moment,\u2019 that this was what I was truly interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\"
