{"id":134621,"date":"2026-08-11T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=134621"},"modified":"2026-08-10T11:46:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T16:46:02","slug":"spotlight-on-amanda-bartling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/11\/spotlight-on-amanda-bartling\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight on: Amanda Bartling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amanda Bartling has had one employer since college, UNMC, but has had several different roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Council Bluffs native earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in biology from Dana College and landed a part-time research job in the department, working with Drs. Steve Hinrichs and Marilynn Larson. She quickly moved to full-time status as a research technologist and stayed there nine years while earning her master\u2019s degree in microbiology and pathology before being recruited to the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory as a laboratory technologist. A few years ago, she was promoted to supervisor, and last year she became the laboratory manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis year will be my 20<sup>th<\/sup> year at UNMC\u2014my whole career has been here,\u201d she said. Bartling said being a manager has been an adjustment. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely changed from more of a hands-on role,\u201d she said, to more of making sure everybody in the lab can do their best work. \u201cNow I see the full picture more. I like having different experiences and learning new things, and then just being in a position where I can improve things and improve our processes. Sometimes you see oh, I didn\u2019t realize there was a gap here. Let\u2019s see how we can fix that, or how can we make this more efficient, or how can I save techs time on doing this process or make the paperwork less of a burden, that type of stuff,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her contributions haven\u2019t gone unnoticed. NPHL Director Emily McCutchen, MS, said: \u201cAmanda has been instrumental to NPHL&#8217;s success through multiple major public health responses, including the COVID-19 pandemic, mpox, avian influenza, Lassa fever, and most recently, the Andes hantavirus response. Her expertise, experience, and steady leadership help ensure that NPHL operates efficiently every day, while her thoughtful perspective consistently drives innovation and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/amanda-bartling-2-900x600-1.jpg\" alt=\"amanda bartling 2 900\u00d7600\" class=\"wp-image-134625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/amanda-bartling-2-900x600-1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/amanda-bartling-2-900x600-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/amanda-bartling-2-900x600-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bartling with one of her woodcarving creations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeyond her professional accomplishments, Amanda continually impresses us with her incredible artistic talent,\u201d McCutchen said. \u201cWhether she&#8217;s solving complex challenges or creating beautiful artwork, she brings creativity, dedication, and excellence to everything she does. Amanda is truly a remarkable talent, and we&#8217;re fortunate to have her as part of the NPHL team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bartling said: \u201cI have very supportive leadership around me, so if I\u2019m like hey, can we change this, can we improve this, they\u2019re like yes, absolutely, let\u2019s do it. There are no hindrances; we don\u2019t have political games we have to play here. Everybody is very much \u2018let\u2019s make this better for everybody,\u2019 so it\u2019s a great place to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said much of her focus as manager has been on the switch to Beaker, the new laboratory information system. \u201cI was really involved with making sure our side of that all is set up properly and functioning, and it\u2019s an ongoing process. It will be for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When not at work, Bartling can often be found doing arts and crafts, particularly woodcarving and pyrography, or wood burning. \u201cYou make pictures on wood, essentially,\u201d she said, using a heated metal tool. \u201cI have a few classes where I teach other people how to do that.\u201d Bartling said she started crocheting and knitting when she was growing up, and her mother got her into sewing, while her father taught her woodcarving. \u201cBasically, if it\u2019s something arty or crafty, I tend to like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also dotes on two dogs at home, Rogue and Ramona. \u201cThey are both rescue dogs\u2014they\u2019re both mutts.
