{"id":134634,"date":"2026-08-11T11:44:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T16:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=134634"},"modified":"2026-08-13T10:00:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T15:00:02","slug":"unmc-dentistry-using-federal-funds-to-address-rural-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/11\/unmc-dentistry-using-federal-funds-to-address-rural-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC Dentistry using federal funds to address rural needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNMC College of Dentistry has embarked on four aims to improve the state\u2019s rural dental health after having been awarded more than $4.6 million&nbsp;in&nbsp;Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP)&nbsp;grant funding by the federal government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RHTP funding is part of a&nbsp;$50 billion&nbsp;program through the&nbsp;Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services.&nbsp;Funds are administered by&nbsp;states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNMC College of Dentistry is&nbsp;utilizing&nbsp;just over&nbsp;$925,000 per year over the next five years to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Implement&nbsp;an urgent dental&nbsp;care clinic at the college\u2019s home on East Campus in Lincoln.<\/strong>&nbsp;Medical emergency departments are not equipped to handle dental&nbsp;emergencies,&nbsp;and&nbsp;dental ER visits&nbsp;leave patients with big&nbsp;bills besides.&nbsp;Nebraska dental-related emergency room visits cost&nbsp;an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mcas-proxyweb.mcas.ms\/certificate-checker?login=false&amp;originalUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fdhhs.ne.gov.mcas.ms%2FPages%2FDental-Reports.aspx%3F%3FMcasTsid%3D15600%23docaccess-0bb41a3207fdc463e2cb700f484214e7&amp;McasCSRF=667c7a37e79c162f41d2693c73a7ab542f52045eeb106fcb090874cbdec66f8f\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"average of nearly $3,200, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average of nearly $3,200<\/a>&nbsp;per visit in 2023&nbsp;while likely not helping much. The dental-specific urgent care clinic will cost&nbsp;less for patients and offer true dental care rather than \u201cBand-Aid\u201d measures. It also&nbsp;eases&nbsp;the strain on the state\u2019s medical emergency departments, UNMC dental faculty said.&nbsp;The&nbsp;urgent&nbsp;clinic opened July 1&nbsp;and&nbsp;has walk-in hours of&nbsp;8-10 a.m. through the summer. Afternoon and evening hours are set to be added in the fall.&nbsp;Private donations from alumni and industry partners also significantly contributed to the establishment of the clinic.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Address rural dental deserts through partnerships with health departments throughout the state.<\/strong>&nbsp;Logan Kludt Lawrence, DDS,&nbsp;director of public health projects&nbsp;for the college, will supervise&nbsp;dental and dental hygiene student rotations&nbsp;at&nbsp;select&nbsp;health departments&nbsp;in counties&nbsp;designated&nbsp;as rural or frontier.&nbsp;These rotating students will serve&nbsp;as&nbsp;additional&nbsp;workforce for&nbsp;educational and preventative measures already being conducted by these health departments \u2013&nbsp;including but not limited to head and neck screenings, cleanings, limited denture adjustments,&nbsp;fluoride&nbsp;and sealants.&nbsp;\u201cThese students will be provided a hands-on opportunity to practice with mobile and portable equipment in rural&nbsp;health&nbsp;departments, educational and long-term care settings,\u201d Dr. Lawrence said. \u201cThe students will not only be&nbsp;addressing an access to preventative oral healthcare barrier but will also be learning ways to envision their role in community health and engagement in their professional roles upon graduation.\u201d&nbsp;Partnership&nbsp;agreements&nbsp;and CODA (Commission on Dental Accreditation) approval are currently being&nbsp;pursued.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Re-establish Western Dental Day<\/strong>.&nbsp;The UNMC College of Dentistry has traditionally&nbsp;traveled to the Panhandle and Western region of the state for preventative and educational outreach.&nbsp;Unfortunately, those efforts&nbsp;were slowed by&nbsp;the COVID-19 pandemic&nbsp;and are not&nbsp;yet back to pre-pandemic levels.&nbsp;RHTP funding will be used to reinvigorate and&nbsp;strengthen preventative and&nbsp;oral care&nbsp;outreach to the Western part of the state.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Support the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute\u00a0Caring for Champions\u00a0Dental Clinic\u00a0to expand access to dental care for\u00a0adults and children with\u00a0intellectual and\u00a0developmental disabilities<\/strong>.\u00a0MMI\u2019s Caring for Champions Dental Clinic\u00a0provides general anesthesia to patients with special healthcare needs who otherwise\u00a0could not tolerate comprehensive dental care, including those with Medicaid benefits.\u00a0There is currently a greater than three\u00a0year\u00a0wait\u00a0for adult\u00a0appointments at this clinic.\u00a0The clinic\u00a0is currently\u00a0supported by\u00a0Health Resources and Services Administration\u00a0funding, which expires this fall.\u00a0RHTP funding will keep the clinic operational, while expanding dental services at MMI for\u00a0these underserved patients.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greg Bennett, DMD, executive associate dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry,
