{"id":134992,"date":"2026-08-27T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=134992"},"modified":"2026-08-26T13:23:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T18:23:46","slug":"research-specific-funding-awards-jump-35-for-unmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/27\/research-specific-funding-awards-jump-35-for-unmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Research-specific funding awards jump 35% for UNMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>The University of Nebraska Medical Center saw research-specific awards jump 35% in fiscal year 2025-26, to more than $230 million from $170 million in the previous year.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All sponsored awards, which include non-research awards, were up 30%, to just under $290 million from $223 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research Ken Bayles, PhD, credited UNMC research leaders, investigators and members of their teams for developing a more diverse research portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe recognized early on the need to focus on funding sources beyond the National Institutes of Health,\u201d Dr. Bayles said. \u201cThis has not only helped us through the funding challenges of the last year but has allowed us to realize the biggest increase in UNMC history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal grant and contract funding increased to $109 million, up from $97.6 million the previous year, even as the number of individual federal awards declined. Industry-sponsored funding also grew substantially, reaching $56.4 million compared with $33 million the previous year. Federal subcontracts, state grants and contracts and other external funding also saw significant increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Bayles pointed to a large industry-sponsored clinical trial to study new therapeutic approaches to combat <em>Clostridium difficile<\/em> (<em>C. diff<\/em>) infections, as well as a large award from the HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) to continue the impactful work of the Global Center for Health Security (GCHS).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese large awards are a big part of the story, but the record numbers we saw last year are a result of across-the-board increases,\u201d Dr. Bayles said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Bayles did sound a note of caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough these results are exciting, they underscore the need for continued support from our state and community partners to proportionately grow our research infrastructure and workforce,\u201d he said. \u201cThese funding agencies and industry partners are counting on us to deliver so we are going to do everything we can to meet the demand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russell McCulloh, MD, associate vice chancellor for clinical research, said the growth reflects the extraordinary work of research teams across UNMC and its health system partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe work of these teams is bringing new technology and treatments to our region for the benefit of our patients, families and communities, and enhancing opportunities for Nebraska&#8217;s skilled workforce,\u201d Dr. McCulloh said. \u201cContinued investments in our teams, our processes, and our research enterprise will enable UNMC to continue this exciting trajectory.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNMC Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, said: \u201cThe remarkable growth in UNMC research awards are a testament to the continued dedication of our faculty and staff who have continued to find way to innovate and apply for grants even during the challenging federal finding environment. I especially applaud Drs.&nbsp;Ken Bayles, Rusty McCulloh and their teams in the office of the vice chancellor for research, who have worked tirelessly to ensure we grow our industry partnerships and alternative sources of funding and have improved internal processes to enable these partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"  g t
