{"id":135430,"date":"2026-09-15T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=135430"},"modified":"2026-09-14T08:16:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T13:16:54","slug":"unmc-created-digital-platform-garners-recognition-nih-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/09\/15\/unmc-created-digital-platform-garners-recognition-nih-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC-created digital platform nets recognition, NIH grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Familyroom.health, the UNMC-created digital platform launched last year, has received two national accolades: a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program, which funds proven technologies as they move from research toward commercial use, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/aannet.org\/news\/733859\/American-Academy-of-Nursing-Designates-Three-Innovative-Care-Models-as-Edge-Runners-.htm\">American Academy of Nursing&#8217;s Edge Runner &nbsp;Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NIH award marks a milestone for Nebraska. According to NIH Reporter, it is the largest STTR award the National Institute of Nursing Research has made to any team, in any state, since the program&#8217;s inception. It is also the largest STTR award ever made to a Nebraska-based team across all NIH institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breanna Hetland, PhD, the Gail and Jim Anderson Professor at the UNMC College of Nursing, shepherded the platform through a dozen years of research and development. Drawn from her own experiences as a family member of a critically ill patient, the platform allows families to chart their contributions directly in the electronic health record, making family input a documented part of patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform is currently\u00a0in clinical trial at Nebraska Medicine, and a version of the platform is being used in a research program at Intermountain Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NIH grant will fund the platform\u2019s next phase of growth, Dr. Hetland said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This grant lets us throw our efforts into commercializing Familyroom.health and preparing it to scale,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It will fund enhancements to the platform and another clinical trial, but the ultimate goal for me is impact. And we can&#8217;t reach that impact until we get this out of research and into practice.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To accomplish that, Dr. Hetland and co-founder Greg Nelson are growing the project team.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re building out a team with dedicated leadership in technology and integration, strategy, go-to-market, innovation and research, so that each part of this gets the focused expertise it deserves,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That gives me the bandwidth to stay deeply involved in the science and lead the clinical trial, while working alongside the team to drive the platform toward scale.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Hetland called the Edge Runner distinction a huge honor, as well. The AAN designation recognizes projects that \u201cunderscore the leadership, ingenuity, and determination of nurses. Edge Runner models demonstrate significant clinical, financial, community and policy outcomes that are sustained and replicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means so much to me because of what it recognizes,\u201d Dr. Hetland said. \u201cIt\u2019s a programmatic award. It&#8217;s not specific to just an app or one person; it reflects the collective innovation, effort, and dedication of the research team, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine colleagues, as well as the generosity of the patients and families who made this possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What others are saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelly Vaughn, chief nursing officer at Nebraska Medicine, said: \u201cWe have been pleased to work with UNMC on this project. Nurse-led research and innovation in connection with our family and patients is key to providing safe, effective patient and family centered care.\u00a0The acknowledgement by the AAN of this nurse-led initiative speaks to the viability of the Familyroom.health concept.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Dixon, PhD, president and CEO of UNeMed, said the platform is earning these recognitions \u201cbecause it solves a real problem for nurses and families\u201d and praised Dr. Hetland\u2019s rigor and discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe is a fantastic scientist-entrepreneur, and UNeMed has been proud to be her partner every step of the way. My hope for the future is simple: that her work reaches families far beyond Nebraska and shows other nurse-scientists what is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Receiving the NIH grant and the AAN\u2019s Edge Runner Award is a testament to our faculty&#8217;s commitment to advancing healthcare through innovative research,\u201d said Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. \u201cThis recognition not only highlights the groundbreaking research we\u2019re conducting in the UNMC College of Nursing, but also underscores the importance of nurse-led initiatives like Familyroom.
