New Investigator Awards go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past year have secured their first independent funding from a national source. New investigators also must demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and\/or presenting their findings at national conventions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:\u00a0<\/strong>Amanda Brinkworth, PhD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>\u00a0Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, UNMC College of Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>\u00a02019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>\u00a0Lanesville, Indiana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please describe your research focus in three words or less:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organoid models of infection<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is research important in the world today?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engaging in scientific research gives us a chance to use both creativity and curiosity to meet challenges in our world. It empowers us to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and resources available to make new discoveries and inspire the next generation of scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<strong>My research will make a difference because:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My research team uses advanced new technologies and methods to provide insight into mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis at human infection sites. We think this approach will result in promising therapeutic strategies to improve human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The best advice I\u2019ve ever received is:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celebrate even the smallest wins and achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Three things you may not know
