Dr. De Alba recognized by Latino Medical Student Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Armando De Alba, MD, PhD, was honored with the “2026 Latino Medical Student Association National Community Health Trailblazer Award” during the LMSA National Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LMSA is one of the nation\u2019s largest and longest-standing student-led medical organizations, with a national network spanning medical schools across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs assistant dean for student engagement in the UNMC College of Medicine and a longtime LMSA faculty advisor, this recognition was especially meaningful to me,\u201d Dr. De Alba said. \u201cMuch of the work I value most in academic medicine centers on creating opportunities for students, mentoring them as they develop as physicians and leaders, and helping connect their education with the communities they will ultimately serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNMC College of Dentistry Dean Gerard Kugel, DMD, PhD, made a guest appearance on the \u201cDentistry Unmasked\u201d podcast<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month, where he spoke about leadership, commitment, and what it takes to push students to exceed academic expectations.

\u201cDentistry Unmasked\u201dis hosted by Drs. Pamela Maragliano and Brian Nov\u00fd, who posed questions to Dr. Kugel about his background as a dentist on the East coast, and the hands-on approach he takes in his current role as dean.

\u201cA lot of deans sit in their office and they\u2019re on their computer all day, and I get it but if you’re not out in the trenches, you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on,” Dr Kugel said. “You don\u2019t know what the faculty issues are, you don\u2019t know the mistakes (that could be being made).\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kugel has been dean of the college of dentistry for three years this September, and in that time, he said, he has seen many dental students gain large amounts of clinical experience. He spoke about students working in UNMC clinics installing real crowns, implants, dentures and more, collecting valuable learning experiences and confidence-boosting achievements along the way.

\u201cWe have the most amazing group of students at this school; their credentials are off the charts,\u201d Dr. Kugel said. \u201cWe have a different breed here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
