{"id":135857,"date":"2026-09-29T11:41:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T16:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=135857"},"modified":"2026-09-29T14:23:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:23:18","slug":"largest-cohort-participates-in-physical-therapy-summer-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/09\/29\/largest-cohort-participates-in-physical-therapy-summer-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Largest cohort participates in physical therapy summer program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eighteen students from three Asian universities participated in the UNMC Summer Experiential Education (SEED) program in physical therapy this past summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students finished the program with a sense of patient-centered care and professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One student shadowed an in-patient physical therapist at Nebraska Medicine, gaining firsthand insight into care across multiple specialty units. \u201cBecause many patients required assistance from nurses or occupation therapists, scheduling treatment often depended on coordinating with the entire healthcare team,\u201d said Shu-Ching Chao, SEED participant. \u201cThis experience helped me understand how important interdisciplinary collaboration is in acute care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI realized that rehabilitation is not only about restoring physical function but also about understanding patients\u2019 perspectives and helping them regain confidence and independence,\u201d said Qiaoxue Wang, SEED student. \u201cI believe that only by understanding patients\u2019 difficulties from their perspectives can we develop more appropriate and individualized rehabilitation interventions. This experience reminded me that empathy is just as important as clinical knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Created for international physical therapy and rehabilitation students, the Summer Experiential Education program is a three-week, in-person experience at UNMC. Administered by the Office of Global Engagement and delivered by the UNMC Physical Therapy Program, the initiative offers a comprehensive approach to learning. Participants gain hands-on experience through research lab practice, deepen their clinical knowledge through faculty lectures, interact with UNMC DPT students and observe real-world care during clinical shadowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSEED program provides well-rounded and experiential learning opportunities for our international physical therapy students,\u201d said Joseph Siu, director of the SEED program. \u201cAll students graduated from this program are part of UNMC family and are welcome back for more advanced learning options such as graduate or DPT programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the largest in-person cohort in the nine-year history of the program,\u201d said Jane Meza, PhD, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs. \u201cWe are thrilled to share our physical therapy expertise so these students can apply what they\u2019ve learned when they return to their home universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen students from three Asian universities participated in the UNMC Summer Experiential Education (SEED) program in physical therapy this past summer.
