{"id":136279,"date":"2026-10-14T01:54:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-14T06:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=136279"},"modified":"2026-10-13T08:59:33","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T13:59:33","slug":"program-takes-new-angle-on-treatment-of-stimulant-use-disorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/10\/14\/program-takes-new-angle-on-treatment-of-stimulant-use-disorder\/","title":{"rendered":"Program aims at treatment of stimulant use disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new contingency management program facilitated by the UNMC Department of Psychiatry will help individuals with stimulant use disorders through the power of motivational incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program \u2014 including the required staff, supplies, and incentives \u2014 has been fully funded through a two-year grant from Clarkson Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contingency management program, long in the works and developed in collaboration with national experts, is the first of its kind in Nebraska, said Sara Zachman, MD, assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are thrilled and grateful to be able to offer this evidence-based treatment to our patients,\u201d Dr. Zachman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outpatient program will enroll individuals with moderate or severe methamphetamine or cocaine use disorders to come into the Nebraska Medicine Addiction Treatment Clinic twice a week for a drug screen. If negative for stimulants, they will receive an incentive \u2014 typically a debit or gift card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contingency management is an evidence-based intervention, said Kenneth Zoucha, MD, associate professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry. Unlike with opioids, there are no FDA-approved medications to treat individuals with stimulant use disorders, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clarkson Institute is funding the program with a two-year, $260,000 grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Lydiatt, MD, CEO of Clarkson Institute, said the program fits with the organization\u2019s mission of making Nebraska the healthiest state and emphasizing mental health as a key priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking with Drs. Zachman and Zoucha to bring state-of-the-art treatments for addiction is an exemplary investment in the health and well-being of our community and supports our mission. Their passion to heal and knowledge of the field give us great hope that this will improve care for those suffering from addiction,\u201d Dr. Lydiatt said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drs. Zachman and Zoucha plan to welcome the program\u2019s first patients by early next year. Eventually, they hope to see contingency management covered by insurance, including Medicaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, they\u2019re grateful to Clarkson Institute for helping make the program a reality. \u201cAt first glance, there can be stigma and uncertainties in how this program works,\u201d Dr. Zachman said. \u201cWe really feel grateful for the fact that
