{"id":136356,"date":"2026-10-16T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=136356"},"modified":"2026-10-15T13:55:36","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T18:55:36","slug":"distinguished-scientist-sangamesh-kumbar-phd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/10\/16\/distinguished-scientist-sangamesh-kumbar-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Distinguished Scientist: Sangamesh Kumbar, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on Oct. 29 for UNMC\u2019s 2026 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator recipients.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sangamesh Kumbar, PhD, will receive a Distinguished Scientist Award.&nbsp;Distinguished Scientist Awards, which are sponsored by the chancellor, recognize researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:&nbsp;<\/strong>Sangamesh Gurappa Kumbar, PhD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>&nbsp;Professor and associate dean for research, UNMC College of Dentistry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>&nbsp;January 1, 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>&nbsp;Mudhol, Karnataka, India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please describe your research focus in three words or less:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regenerative medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is research important in the world today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research transforms questions into solutions. It allows us to understand the mechanisms of disease, challenge existing assumptions and develop new approaches to improve human health. In a rapidly changing world, research is essential not only for advancing medicine but also for preparing the next generation of scientists to think critically, innovate boldly and address problems that have not yet been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My research will make a difference because:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My research seeks to develop practical, translational approaches that help injured tissues heal and restore function. By combining regenerative medicine, biomaterials, drug delivery and bioelectrical strategies, we aim to address complex injuries that do not heal effectively with current treatments. Importantly, our work bridges fundamental science and clinical application \u2014 from understanding how tissues regenerate to developing technologies that can ultimately benefit patients. I believe the greatest impact will come from creating solutions that are not only scientifically innovative but also accessible, translatable and capable of improving quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The best advice I\u2019ve ever received is:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSurround yourself with people who are better than you, and help them succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I can do the same thing repeatedly without getting bored\u2014a useful trait in research!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I grew up practicing traditional Indian farming, which taught me patience and persistence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I love walking, hiking and running, especially outdoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p
