{"id":136666,"date":"2026-10-27T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=136666"},"modified":"2026-10-26T11:24:37","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T16:24:37","slug":"research-leadership-paul-sorgen-phd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/10\/27\/research-leadership-paul-sorgen-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Leadership: Paul Sorgen, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on Oct. 29 for UNMC\u2019s 2026 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator recipients.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Paul Sorgen, PhD, will receive a Research Leadership Award.&nbsp;Research Leadership Awards honor scientists previously recognized as Distinguished Scientists who have a longstanding research funding history and also serve as research leaders and mentors on campus.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:<\/strong> Paul Sorgen, PhD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>\u00a0Professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UNMC College of Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>\u202fJuly 2003\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>\u202fBrooklyn, New York<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please describe your research focus in three words or less:\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gap junction regulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is research important in the world today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research is one of the most powerful ways we can improve the future. It helps us understand disease, develop new treatments, solve complex problems and prepare for challenges we cannot yet anticipate. But its impact goes beyond individual discoveries. Research creates a culture of curiosity, collaboration and innovation, and it gives future generations the tools and opportunities to build upon what we have learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My work will make a difference because:\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It addresses both discovery and opportunity. Scientifically, we are working to better understand how communication between heart cells changes during disease, with the goal of identifying new ways to protect the heart and improve outcomes. Equally important, I have had the privilege of helping train and mentor the next generation of scientists. The discoveries we make today matter, but the people we prepare to make tomorrow\u2019s discoveries may ultimately be our greatest impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The best advice I could give a beginning researcher is:\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be curious, be willing to learn and channel a little MacGyver &#8212; the TV character famous for creatively solving problems with whatever he had available. Some of the best researchers I have trained were not the ones who had every answer; they were the ones who asked the right questions, troubleshot when things went wrong and found creative ways to move forward. Curiosity, persistence, adaptability and a little ingenuity can take you a very long way in research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The toughest lesson I\u2019ve learned is:\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t get too high with the good or too low with the bad. Stay humble, keep working hard and learn from both. Grant reviews taught me this well. When I receive a difficult critique, I read it, put it away for a week and come back when the emotion is gone. Then I address each concern. If a reviewer misunderstood something or flat-out got it wrong, I tell myself I should have explained it more clearly. That mindset has made me a better scientist and a better communicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The best part of my job is:\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The freedom to let the scientific question take me in new directions. I began my career as an NMR spectroscopist, and today my lab differentiates stem cells and works with animal models of heart failure. I have never stopped learning, and that is what keeps science exciting. Every new question can require a new approach, a new skill or an entirely new way of thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I officiate college and high school basketball.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I collect original artwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I once won a salsa-making contest at Mulhall\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Sorgen is a professor in the UNMC Department of
