{"id":136749,"date":"2026-10-29T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=136749"},"modified":"2026-10-29T08:37:02","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T13:37:02","slug":"cattlemens-ball-organization-recognized-with-national-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2026\/10\/29\/cattlemens-ball-organization-recognized-with-national-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Cattlemen\u2019s Ball organization receives national award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cattlemen\u2019s Ball of Nebraska, an organization that has raised millions of dollars to support cancer research at the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center over the past three decades, was awarded the Champion for Cures Award from the Association of American Cancer Institutes on Monday (Oct. 26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several members of the Cattlemen\u2019s Ball organization received the award in Chicago at the AACI national meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Cattlemen\u2019s Ball continues to be an invaluable champion and steadfast partner of the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center,\u201d said Joann Sweasy, PhD, director of the cancer center. \u201cIts support has fueled the center\u2019s growth and helped catalyze paradigm-shifting cancer research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1998, the Cattlemen\u2019s Ball of Nebraska hosts its annual fundraising event each summer. The Cattlemen\u2019s Ball is held in a different location each year, giving Nebraska communities the opportunity to showcase their areas to the state.\u00a0 Ninety percent of the raised funds go to the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Nebraska\u2019s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.\u00a0Ten percent of the proceeds are returned to the local community for health and wellness initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since it was founded, the Cattlemen\u2019s Ball of Nebraska has provided more than $22 million in funding to the cancer center.\u00a0 The 2027 <a href=\"https:\/\/cattlemensball.com\/\">Cattlemen\u2019s Ball<\/a> will take place near Stromsburg on June 4-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Sweasy is in the midst of a two-year term as president of the AACI, which represents more than 100 academic and freestanding cancer centers in the United States and
