The Zoom event, titled \u201cAntimicrobial Peptides: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow II,\u201d featured leading figures in antimicrobial peptide research from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oct. 19 event was the second such conference\u2014the first was in 2023, to mark the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aps.unmc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Antimicrobial Peptide Database, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noopener\">Antimicrobial Peptide Database<\/a> created by the laboratory of Guangshun \u201cGus\u201d Wang, PhD, a professor in UNMC\u2019s Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. The database has been embraced around the globe by scientists, who have cited it thousands of times in their research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining Dr. Wang as conference chairs were <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/medmicro\/faculty\/Bevins\/index.html\">Chuck Bevins, MD, PhD,<\/a> from the University of California Davis, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.gmu.edu\/directory\/monique-van-hoek\">Monique van Hoek, PhD,<\/a> from George Mason University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Joseph Khoury, department chairman, opened the conference. \u201cIt is an honor and a privilege to have the University of Nebraska Medical Center host the meeting,\u201d he said, congratulating the conference co-chairs for putting together an outstanding agenda. \u201cThere\u2019s really not a single talk or presentation that doesn\u2019t promise to be exciting and at the forefront of the field.\u201d One anti-aging peptide and one cyclotide pesticide announced during the meeting are already on the market, Dr. Wang noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 16<sup>th<\/sup> and final presenter of the day was <a href=\"https:\/\/imb.uq.edu.au\/research-groups\/craik\">David Craik, PhD,<\/a> from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Wang noted that Dr. Craik\u2019s talk started before 8 a.m. the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. van Hoek quipped: \u201cYesterday, today and tomorrow, and David, you\u2019re the tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference co-chairs said there were many great interactions during the day and lots of questions. So many questions that Dr. Wang said they\u2019ll need to adjust the schedule for the next conference to include more time for audience Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to thank everybody for their contribution. Hopefully we\u2019ll see you again, maybe in two years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2026
