This issue of the newsletter highlights new leadership, significant award recognition and upcoming events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, we gathered for a special event to celebrate our four new division chiefs. I look forward to supporting and working closely with Dr. Matt Lunning in hematology, Dr. Nicole Shonka in medical oncology, Dr. Bryant England in rheumatology and immunology, and Dr. Stephen Mohring in general internal medicine. While other division chiefs have been serving in an interim capacity for some time, Dr. Mohring was recently announced and will officially begin his role as division chief on Nov. 1. From left to right are Stephen Mohring, MD, Bryant England, MD, PhD, Nicole Shonka, MD, and Matt Lunning, DO.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am also proud to highlight recent faculty achievements and national recognitions across many divisions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Mark Rupp received the prestigious Senior Scholar Award from the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America during the opening plenary session of IDWeek Oct. 21 in Washington, D.C. This award recognizes investigators and practitioners for the breadth and quality of their contributions to infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNMC celebrated its 2026 Research Award recipients at an event Oct. 29. Dr. Ted Mikuls is UNMC\u2019s 21st Scientist Laureate, while Dr. Ruxana Sadikot and Dr. Saraswathi Viswanathan have been recognized as Distinguished Scientists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Five of our faculty members were recently inducted into UNMC\u2019s Interprofessional Society of Educators. Congratulations to Drs. Natalie Crump, Jennifer Davis, Angela Hewlett, Jasmine Marcelin and Stephen Mohring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two internal medicine recipients received UNMC Medicine Alumni Awards. Tate Johnson, MD, PhD, is the recipient of the 2026 Early Career Achievement Award, and Amy Cannella, MD, has been recognized with the Dedication to Student Excellence Award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This issue also shares that several of our faculty members have taken on new roles and leadership appointments. Kelsey Klute, MD, has been appointed as the Vice Chair of the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee at the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Melissa Teply has stepped into the role of Communications COIL Director for the UNMC College of Medicine. Dr. John Windle has been named UNMC\u2019s first Associate Vice Chancellor for Healthcare Artificial Intelligence. He will co-chair UNMC\u2019s Campus Steering Committee for Healthcare Artificial Intelligence, alongside committee member Dr. Cory Rohlfsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, take a moment to read about special opportunities available in our department. Join us for our department\u2019s second campuswide food packaging event Nov. 19 as we come together to pack 30,000 meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity in our community. The Office of Belonging and Community Engagement is still actively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.signupgenius.com\/go\/30E0F4BA5AB2BA4F49-65061057-pack#\/\">seeking volunteers<\/a> and all at UNMC are invited to participate. The Office of Research and Development is now accepting applications for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/research\/grants\/scientistdevaward.html\">Scientist Development Award<\/a>. This mentored program provides up to $100,000 in total funding for one year to support young scientists in pursuing focused research and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you to all in our department for your efforts.
