Wayment comes to AHEC from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, where she spent four years as the program manager for its ARPA-funded initiatives.

This year’s 76 AHEC students, from communities across Nebraska, arrived at UNMC earlier this year. They will spend the next two years engaging with health professionals, community leaders and potential employers. Scholars come from UNMC, other state universities and colleges, and community college partners across the state, representing dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and radiologic technology.

“We are excited to welcome a new group of scholars who will carry UNMC’s mission into communities across the state,” said Jeffery Harrison MD, AHEC program director and chair of the UNMC Department of Family Medicine. “We are equally pleased to welcome Caitlyn Wayment as deputy director and program manager. Her experience and commitment to workforce and collaboration will strengthen how AHEC works with partners across campuses and Nebraska.”

Wayment said she was excited to join the program.

“AHEC does so much to connect students with the communities where Nebraska needs them most,” she said. “My goal is to build stronger bridges between AHEC and other programs and colleges across campus, so that scholars see what interprofessional care really looks like before they ever start practicing.”

The AHEC program was established at UNMC in 2001 and is part of a national initiative. In the first year, scholars learn about core program areas. In the second, they apply and integrate what they learned. Scholars also earn certification in at least one area, such as mental health first aid or patient safety and quality, and are supported by five regional AHECs in Omaha, Norfolk, Kearney, Scottsbluff and Lincoln.

The program’s track record speaks for itself: 304 scholars have graduated from the Nebraska AHEC Scholars program, 84% of graduating scholars are employed, and of those, 76% work in Nebraska and 56% in rural or medically underserved areas.

“Scholars already get their clinical education in their home programs,” Wayment said. “What we add is a window into rural practice, through conversations with providers, community leaders and employers, so they can picture themselves serving these communities.”

Caitlyn Wayment named deputy director and program manager as 76 new AHEC scholars begin
