Maurer, M.D., announced today that he has appointed a 12-member committee to look at the structure of the vice chancellor for academic affairs position.<\/p>\n<p>The vice chancellor post is presently held by William Berndt, Ph.D., who announced earlier this month that he would be retiring on May 31 to emeritus status. Dr. Berndt has served as vice chancellor since 1985 with the 17-year stint interrupted only when he served as interim chancellor in 1991-1992 and chancellor in 1996-1998.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prior to appointing a search committee to identify a successor, I am appointing a representative committee to identify the elements and skills needed for this job and to look at the structure of the vice chancellorship in general,&#8221; Dr. Maurer said. &#8220;I am asking each of the committee members to evaluate and shape the future of this position for the challenges ahead. I am hoping to receive their recommendations within 90 days. At that time, I will select a search committee to begin the search.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for clinical affairs for the UNMC College of Medicine and president of University Medical Associates, will serve as chairman of the committee, which will be meeting in the near future to further delineate the position and the charge given by Dr. Maurer. <\/p>\n<p>Other members of the committee and the units they represent are: Bob Bartee, chancellor&#8217;s office, Tony Hollingsworth, Ph.D., Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases; Dave Brown, Ph.D., College of Dentistry; Irene Klintberg, Ph.D., College of Medicine; Allison Cushman, graduate studies; Del Lee, finance and business services; John Gollan, M.D., internal medicine department; Pat Hageman, Ph.D., School of Allied Health Professions; Sheila Ryan, Ph.D., College of Nursing; Terry Hexum, Ph.D., Faculty Senate; and Gary Yee, Pharm.D., College of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"PQdUxG F fm TUMHkdYg KCy\"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNMC Chancellor Harold M.
