For his extraordinary role in UNMC’s educational programs, John Ramsell, M.D., has been named the first recipient of the UNMC College of Medicine’s Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award. <\/p>\n

A clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, Dr. Ramsell was formally recognized May 10 during the College of Medicine’s medical student convocation and hooding ceremony. <\/p>\n

Dr. Ramsell, an active volunteer faculty member at UNMC since 1970, also received the inaugural Volunteer Faculty of the Month Award in 2001. <\/p>\n

“Dr. Ramsell has been a tireless and highly valued teacher to the residents in the department of family medicine at UNMC since 1977,” said James Armitage, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine. “During that time he has interacted with more than 190 family practice residents and taught them the basic skills of ophthalmologic diagnosis and treatment.”<\/p>\n

The Volunteer Faculty of the Year award was established to honor volunteer faculty members who have played an extraordinary role in the educational programs of UNMC students and residents. Each month, the College of Medicine recognizes one volunteer faculty member at a luncheon hosted by the dean. The volunteer faculty of the year recipient is chosen from those honorees. <\/p>\n

Dr. Ramsell was an instructor in the department of ophthalmology from 1971 to 1974 and a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology from 1974 to 2001. Last July, he was promoted to clinical associate professor. <\/p>\n

“Dr. Ramsell is an outstanding clinician, leader and educator whose teaching rotation is always ranked at the top of educational experiences for UNMC’s family medicine students,” Dr. Armitage said. “His contributions set a high standard for those who will follow.”<\/p>\n
