{"id":19885,"date":"2003-02-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-02-18T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/02\/18\/new-hand-hygiene-guidelines-how-do-they-affect-you\/"},"modified":"2003-02-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-02-18T06:00:00","slug":"new-hand-hygiene-guidelines-how-do-they-affect-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/02\/18\/new-hand-hygiene-guidelines-how-do-they-affect-you\/","title":{"rendered":"New hand hygiene guidelines &#8211; how do they affect you?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Anyone involved in direct inpatient care and\/or high-risk patient care will need to be in compliance with the updated Hand Hygiene policy, effective, Monday, March 17.  <\/p>\n<p>The major changes within the context of the policy are as follows:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Routine hand-washing is performed for at least 15 seconds;<br \/>\n<LI>Alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be used routinely for hand hygiene, unless hands are visibly soiled;<br \/>\n<LI>No artificial fingernails or extenders are allowed for personnel involved in direct inpatient care and\/or the care of high-risk (e.g., immunocompromised) patients;<br \/>\n<LI>Natural nails are to be maintained at a short (1\/4 inch or less) length;<br \/>\n<LI>If nail polish is worn, it must not be chipped or peeling.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p><b>Origins of the policy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These changes were a direct result of the recently revised &#8220;Guideline for Hand Hygiene in Health-Care Settings&#8221; from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC). <\/p>\n<p>The CDC\/HICPAC guidelines were published Oct. 25, 2002, in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report 51(RR 16); 1-44 (Web site:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/rr516a1.htm\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/rr516a1.htm ).<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><b>Areas affected<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Although not totally inclusive, some examples of areas\/personnel who are involved in direct inpatient care and\/or high-risk patient care are:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Intensive Care Units<br \/>\n<LI>RNs<br \/>\n<LI>MDs<br \/>\n<LI>Radiology<br \/>\n<LI>Phlebotomy<br \/>\n<LI>Dialysis<br \/>\n<LI>Transplant Clinics<br \/>\n<LI>Inpatient Care Areas<br \/>\n<LI>Operating Rooms<br \/>\n<LI>Respiratory Therapy<br \/>\n<LI>Occupational\/Physical Therapy<br \/>\n<LI>Transport Services<\/UL><\/p>\n<p><b>Excluded areas<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Some examples of areas\/personnel which may possibly be excluded from the framework of this policy (who are not involved in direct inpatient care and\/or high-risk patient care) are:<br \/>\n<UL><LI>Housekeeping<br \/>\n<LI>Dietary<br \/>\n<LI>General out-patient care clinics  (do not routinely care for high-risk patients)<br \/>\n<LI>Pharmacy<br \/>\n<LI>IT<br \/>\n<LI>Access <\/UL><\/p>\n<p><b>Questions, concerns<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you have questions or concerns regarding this policy contact the following personnel within the department of healthcare epidemiology &#8212; Teresa Fitzgerald, 559-7378; Nedra Marion, 559-7968; or Dr. Mark Rupp, 559-5276.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone involved in direct inpatient care and\/or high-risk patient care will need to be in compliance with the updated Hand Hygiene policy, effective, Monday, March 17. <i>See story for details.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19885","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","department-unmc-today-todays-headlines"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>New hand hygiene guidelines - how do they affect you?<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Anyone involved in direct inpatient care and\/or high-risk patient care will need to be in compliance with the updated Hand Hygiene policy, effective, Monday, March 17.
