Barnes, professor, UNMC College of Dentistry department of surgical specialties, recently received the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Oral Health Research Award sponsored by Colgate. <\/p>\n<p>The award, presented at the IADR general session in Goteberg, Sweden, recognizes meritorious research contributions in the prevention of oral disease and promotion of wellness, which also has resulted in publications in scientific, peer-reviewed journals.<\/p>\n<p>Barnes was recognized for her contributions to oral health research and sustained research funding for more than 25 years. She is the seventh recipient of the award, which is given annually to recipients from all over the world. <\/p>\n<p>Barnes received a plaque and cash award for travel and other support related to attending the annual meeting and research activities.<br \/>\nBarnes said she was extremely humbled and excited to hear she had received the award.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That my work is of sufficient quality to be recognized by my peers makes me very proud and grateful for the recognition,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I am also very grateful to Dr. Lewis Menaker who was a great resource for me at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barnes, who also serves as UNMC College of Dentistry coordinator of clinical research, is a member of the dental hygiene national honor society Sigma Phi Alpha. She serves on the editorial advisory board for Dimensions of Dental Hygiene and the editorial review board for the Journal of Clinical Dentistry and the Journal of Practical Hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>The IADR, which has more than 10,000 members worldwide, works to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health by promoting oral research.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caren M.
