\n<\/TABLE>More than 30 college advisors from across the state attended a one-day symposium Monday (Oct. 6) to learn more about what UNMC offers a student interested in a health career.<\/p>\n

For more than 12 years, Advisors Day has helped college counselors understand the competitive admissions process and curriculum requirements at UNMC and prepare students for the rigors of academic study. <\/p>\n

Not all students who apply to medical school are accepted, sponsors said, so it is important for college advisors to help an undergraduate student focus on the coursework he or she will need to prepare for a health career.<\/p>\n

That’s the goal of Advisors Day.<\/p>\n

“This will help me advise my students on how to succeed in getting into a post-graduate medical field,” said Krissy Vogel, an admissions counselor at the College of Saint Mary.<\/p>\n

Vogel, who attended Advisors Day for the first time, said she is better prepared now to answer a student’s questions. “If a student comes in and says ‘I want to be a doctor,’ I will know what the medical school is looking for and be able to help that student reach his or her goal,” Vogel said.<\/p>\n

Representatives from the UNMC College of Nursing, School of Allied Health Professions, College of Dentistry, College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy gave overviews of their programs. Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor of academic affairs and dean for graduate studies at UNMC, talked about graduate studies and gave an overview of the campus.<\/p>\n

After lunch the advisors toured The Lied Transplant Center and listened to presentations on financial aid and the importance of students maintaining good credit in order to access loans for medical school.<\/p>\n
