{"id":21204,"date":"2004-02-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-02-05T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2004\/02\/05\/unmcs-low-vision-center-offers-hope\/"},"modified":"2004-02-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-02-05T06:00:00","slug":"unmcs-low-vision-center-offers-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2004\/02\/05\/unmcs-low-vision-center-offers-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC&#8217;s low vision center offers hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/lowvisioncenter2004.gif\" border=\"2\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"-1\"><br \/>\nFrom left to right, Patricia Jones, Frank Graf, O.D., and Kathy VonDollen.<br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>There are many factors that contribute to low vision, but there is only one clinic in Nebraska that devotes a full time service to helping patients gain maximum use of their remaining vision.<\/p>\n<p>The Low Vision Center at UNMC is dedicated to helping patients learn how to adapt to their low vision.<\/p>\n<p>February is Low Vision Awareness Month and with the steady rise in the number of people with low vision more high-tech low vision devices are being developed.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of electronic magnification reading machines are now available along with portable and more economical LED light magnifier and low vision glasses. <\/p>\n<p>The variety of choices makes it easier for Frank Graf, O.D., Kathy VonDollen, R.N. and Patricia Jones, R.N., to help the growing number of people seeking assistance at the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We see six new patients a week,&#8221; VonDollen said. &#8220;The average age of the patient is 75 and older and most have macular degeneration as the primary diagnosis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other diseases also contribute to the loss of sight, Dr. Graf said, such as diabetes, glaucoma and cataracts. It can be hard for a person to accept at first, he said, but with help a person can begin to understand how to use the sight he or she has left.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are a rehabilitation clinic,&#8221; Jones said. &#8220;We help patients realize that there is &#8216;hope&#8217; &#8211; that they can learn how to function better with their remaining vision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is the first step. The next step is to find the best optical device to enhance the person&#8217;s remaining vision. And with the wide variety of choices now available, VonDollen said she can usually help a person find a device that will meet his or her needs for less than $100.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The devices available start as simple and inexpensively as a $30 magnifier,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It depends on the person&#8217;s need when they come to the clinic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To obtain additional information or to make a low vision clinic appointment, call the University of Nebraska Low Vision Center at (402) 559-2463.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many factors that contribute to low vision, but there is only one clinic in Nebraska that devotes a full time service to helping patients gain maximum use of their remaining vision.
