While the “Third Annual Cardiovascular Symposium: Best Practices in Cardiovascular Medicine” is intended to attract all health care professionals with a special interest in cardiovascular disease, physicians in family medicine and internal medicine, physician assistants and nurse practitioners will be especially targeted, the director of the symposium said.<\/p>\n

“They are the front line providers who are key in enhancing quality patient care,” said Andrew J. Weis, M. D., an associate professor of cardiology at UNMC and the symposium director. <\/p>\n

\nThis year’s symposium will take place Friday, June 4, at the Durham Research Center at UNMC. Subject matter has been chosen based on recommendations from past symposium attendees and by the front line care provider members of the planning committee.<\/p>\n

“The morning sessions will follow the more traditional core material didactic lecture format and the small group sessions in the afternoon will provide attendees the opportunity to consult with experts in an informal, collegial manner,” Dr. Weis said. “While the small group facilitators will be prepared with their own case presentations regarding the designated topic, participants are encouraged to bring their most challenging cases for discussion.”<\/p>\n

Several UNMC cardiology faculty members will present lectures and facilitate small group sessions during the symposium. Participating guest speakers will be John Graves, M.D., a consultant in the division of hypertension and internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and an associate professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, who will cover “Current Management of Hypertension” [lecture] and “Metabolic Syndrome” [small group] and Joseph Rogers, M.D., an associate professor in the cardiovascular division at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., who will present “What’s New in Congestive Heart Failure?”[lecture] and “Congestive Heart Failure”[small group].<\/p>\n
