As of Oct. 1, all licensed physicians must “attest” to having completed 50 hours of continuing medical education in order to renew their license. LB 1021, passed in 2002, requires all licensed physicians, osteopathic physicians and surgeons to complete 50 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education in a two-year period. <\/p>\n

Each license renewal form on or before Oct. 1 of each even-numbered year will contain an attestation statement, which physicians must sign saying they meet the CME requirements. No additional information will need to accompany the license renewal, said Brenda Ram of UNMC’s Center for Continuing Education.<\/p>\n

Biennially, the licensing board will select, in a random manner, a sample of the renewal applications for audit of continuing competency requirements. Individuals who are selected for audit are required to produce documentation of their continuing education activities for review. <\/p>\n

UNMC’s Center for Continuing Education helps physicians maintain a registry of continuing education credits completed locally and elsewhere, said Lois Colburn, director of UNMC’s Center for Continuing Education. “We log in any CME credits they’ve taken by virtue of doing grand rounds or our own sponsored programs. If they go elsewhere for credits, they need to provide us with formal documentation in a timely manner and we will update their transcript.”<\/p>\n
