Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to deceive you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security number, passwords, or other confidential information. It is important for all e-mail users to remember the following:<\/p>\n

1. Watch out for unsolicited requests via e-mail for confidential information <\/b>(i.e. your own personal information, patient information, student information, corporate credit card).
\n2. Never click on a suspicious hyperlink in an unsolicited e-mail. <\/b>
\n3. Look at the address in the address bar of your Web browser. <\/b>
\n4. Don’t reply to the e-mail if you have a question or are suspicious. <\/b><\/p>\n

Other scams often play on our sensitivity and concern for others. As an example, the National Cyber Security Alliance notes to be aware of online scams and security risks related to Hurricane Katrina<\/a>. <\/p>\n

While there are many valid Web sites for charities, ITS advises you to take a few extra steps to check out the organization before donations and\/or personal information are provided online.<\/p>\n
