{"id":25203,"date":"2006-03-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-03-02T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2006\/03\/02\/educating-women-on-heart-disease\/"},"modified":"2006-03-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2006-03-02T06:00:00","slug":"educating-women-on-heart-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2006\/03\/02\/educating-women-on-heart-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Educating women on heart disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/app1.unmc.edu\/PublicAffairs\/TodaySite\/Images\/SiteImages\/heartdiseasegraphic.jpg\" border=\"2\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\">Heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age.<\/p>\n<p>For many women it is a silent killer as few are aware that one in three will die of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Women often fail to make the connection between the risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol and their own chance of developing heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Valda Ford would like to change that.<\/p>\n<p>On April 5, the UNMC Office of Community and Multicultural Affairs will host the &#8220;Heart and Soul Red Dress Event&#8221; at the Scott Conference Center.<\/p>\n<p>Ford, director of the Office of Community and Multicultural Affairs, said it is UNMC&#8217;s way of taking action to help women in the Omaha metropolitan area fight heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to provide a night of fun-filled, educational and motivational moments that will let women from all walks of life  come together to embrace the binding phenomenon of sisterhood and learn to live healthier lives,&#8221; Ford said. &#8220;We&#8217;re asking women to put on their red dresses or red hats or whatever they have that is red and come to a ladies night out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Seating is limited to 200 and VIP Limousines will transport women from the most vulnerable neighborhoods who are unable to get to the event on their own. <\/p>\n<p>There also are several levels of sponsorship available. &#8220;The hope is to raise enough money to provide seating for women from the most economically deprived neighborhoods,&#8221; Ford said.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about registering for the free event or sponsoring a table, contact Valda Ford at 559-9660 or Renee&#8217; Myles at 291-9256.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsorship payments must be received no later than March 15 and can be mailed to:<br \/>\nUniversity of Nebraska Medical Center Community Partnership<br \/>\n&#8220;Heart and Soul Red Dress Event&#8221; <br \/>\n984040 Nebraska Medical Center<br \/>\nOmaha, NE 68198-4040<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\" RHpWY im  i\"> RHpWY im  i<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age.
