\n<\/TABLE>Mark Mailliard, M.D., and John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., have co-authored a review article titled “Emerging Therapeutics for Chronic Hepatitis B” published in the “Annual Review of Medicine 2006.” <\/p>\n

The Annual Review of Medicine is an invited annual collection of state-of-the-art review articles covering the most important clinical and research advances of the year in Internal Medicine. <\/p>\n

Annual review compilations are published each year for a variety of scientific disciplines through this format (see www.annualreviews.org). The editors of the Annual Review of Medicine sought their involvement in this year’s review because of recognition of their 2003 editorial on hepatitis B in the “New England Journal of Medicine.” <\/p>\n

“This is a timely work because of the current magnitude of the global health risk from chronic hepatitis B and the availability of new therapies with the promise of a durable cessation of viral replication,” Dr. Maillaird said.<\/p>\n

As the 10th most common cause of death, chronic hepatitis B is a preventable global health problem, the authors said, writing: “Newer and emerging strategies for the therapy of chronic hepatitis B are now able to alter the natural history of this global scourge.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Maillaird is chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology in UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gollan is dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.<\/p>\n
